Several Bangkok roads became paralysed during morning rush hour on Wednesday as small cars broke down because of flooded roads, traffic police reported.

One of the roads was Soi Sukhumvit 62, which was under 45 centimetres of water.

The breakdowns led to traffic gridlock, with police saying that Pol Maj-General Mongkol Waroonno, the chief of the Metropolitan Police Division 5, had to rush to the scene to direct traffic himself.

Police directed vehicles to use the Bang Na expressway gate instead of Soi Sukhumvit 62 pending water drainage. Two water pumps have been installed to drain the flooded soi.

Troops direct traffic after heavy rain and floods in Bangkok

By The Nation

Army battalions in Bangkok dispatched troops to help direct traffic at several spots after the capital was hit by heavy rain, resulting in flooding on many roads.

At the Nimitmai Intersection in Min Buri district, the water was about 20 centimetres high and troops from the Ninth Infantry Division were dispatched to direct traffic.

Troops were dispatched from the First Army Division’s First Infantry Battalion to help motorists at On Soi Phaholyothin 8 in Phayathai district, which was also flooded.

At the Yen Arkat Intersection on Soi Nonsee 14, troops from the First Infantry Battalion of the First Army Division were on standby to help motorists. The roads were covered by 5 to 10cm of water.

Another unit of troops was sent to direct traffic at the Thai Uhit bridge and on Boriphat Road in front of the King Rama VII Museum.

That's happened to me several times.  But it's because nobody told me it was a holiday.

Several Bangkok roads were flooded on Wednesday morning after the capital was hit by heavy rains at about 5am, the city administration said.

The Flood Prevention Centre of the Sewerage and Drainage Department of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration issued a report at 6.45am that several Bangkok roads were already inundated, although the rains had not stopped at that time.

Among the reported flooded spots, the centre said the Pattanakarn Road in front of Mercedes Benz showroom near the Pattanakarn Intersecton was under 15 centimetres of water for 150 metres at 5.10am.

At 6am, the centre found that the Lard Prao Road form Soi 112 to Soi Chao Khun Sing was flooded with 15-20cm-deep water for about 400 metres.

It said Sukhumvit Raod from Soi Bearing to Soi La Salle was under 15-20cm of water, while at Srinakharin Road under the T Sports Company, the flood water was about 15-20 cm for about 300 metres.

The centre added that several parts of Sukhumvit Road were flooded with the water rising to the pavement.

The centre said it was racing against time to drain the floodwaters.

As of 6.45am, Nong Chok district saw the heaviest rains with the rainfalls measured at 83cm, the centre added.

At 7am, the centre reported that the average rainfalls in the capital were higher than 100cm with 122cm measured in Nong Chok

FM91 Trafficpro radio station reported that the Lard Prao Road in front of Big C store was flooded on both sides, causing the traffic to slow down.

The radio station reported heavy traffic congestion on the flyover at the Wongsawang Intersection heading to Prachanukul Road.

The inbound Rama IX Raod from Ram Khamhaeng Intersection was already congested, with vehicles moving at a crawl, the radio station reported.

Heavy rain in a lush tropical country...who would have thought?

There is one thing that I know for sure about the weather and that is it is un-predictable.

Always has been always will be.

No matter how much radar and satellites they use.

Heavy rain in January is another thing. It's not called the dry season for nothing.

The rainfall is measured in mm. 122 cm would be an incredible amount.  122 mm is very heavy rain already.
