Video: 20 vs 1 - Thai street violence as compatriots call youths "dogs"

A video put on Facebook by Thai news media showed an attack by a mob of youths on a single person.

Thai Rath said it was 20 vs 1 and it happened at 1am following a fair in Roi-Et in Thailand's north east. A man out with his girlfriend and younger brother had stopped to buy squid on their way home.

A punch was thrown, they said, then the mob attacked.

The video was billed as "A mother screams for her son".

Thousands viewed and shared the story with Satwisut Sriman summing up the mood of many saying: "They're sick....just dogs".

While Nakorn Tonsombat suggested that they should be made to join the army: "There should be no red or black straws for that group," he said referring to the draft pick, "they should be made to do something useful for the country".

While another Thai poster with a Japanese online name suggested wearily what excuses for the violence would follow:

"The parents will say 'our sons are good really', it was just a bit high spirited, the other side started it, it doesn't show the whole event....I was drunk".

No other details about the fight were given by the media.

Always seems to be trouble at temple fairs, bit ironic really but no surprise.

Gangs and testosterone is always going to produce volatile confrontations...

These sort of attacks have nothing to do with the victim. They have nothing to do with the victim's supposed indiscretions or outright poor behaviour. This is just a bunch of very angry men letting loose. They saw an excuse to release pure rage and they jumped on it (excuse the pun). This is nothing more than primitive behaviour by a bunch of people with seriously oppressed anger and rage. Very scary indeed.

:coffee1:

Sadly a rerun of the sort of video we see every week. Cant actually remember seeing a one on one fight on this forum, but I guess its just not how Thai males enjoy their fights.

Very Thai :coffee1:

Bad Thais out-good Thais in.

They call it the Thai way of fighting here in Thailand...or as I call it the Thai coward way!

They are a severely repressed society and culture-living on Denial,Displacement and Projection as a way of keeping in line.

Hence the insane driving, the mass attacks, the slaughter of women by revengeful males and the usual casual drunken murders.

As the old song puts it...

"Pack up your somtam in your plastic bag and smile, smile, smile!"

NOT 20/1 more like 5/1 and the victim started the fight.

Some of the finer points of civilization are: How to debate, how to disagree, how to argue, how to own your mistakes, how to fight with honor, and not go postal every time.  These things did not filter in with industrialization.

All these things were overruled by "face"; the worst thing in thai society holding it back decades.

Did you spot the brilliant suggestion by a Thai man in the article?  A good solution to fighting.  Anyone involved in fighting is automatically enlisted in the army !  Bet this will curb some of the cowards and mobs. Must suggest this in more places !

Ironically in the west, not being able to deal with conflict, not fighting fair, not owning up to your mistakes is a much larger loss of face than someone exposing you or talking dirt about you. But there seems to be no limits to what is acceptable to keep your face here, even massive over reacting, lying, abusing power, seems to perfectly acceptable if you are protecting an image.

Not saying It's right, but he did throw the first punch. Only got himself to blame.

Yes, when I first watched I assumed he was one of the 20 with the fury of his attack.  Think he got what he deserved.

I think you'll find that the guy in the black t-shirt with a white triangle on it punches someone near the victim first. The victim subsequently tries to defend whoever was punched first. It's in the slo-mo black and white section near the end.

No he didn't start it. Look carefully and you'll see one of the gang sucker punch the bloke next to the victim first. The victim retaliated and then "whooosh" - all in. It was more than 5 that had a go too.

Totally agree. Far more interested in themselves and their "face, image, ego" than anything else. And anything is acceptable to protect it. The massive over reaction to the slightest conflict or not being able "to get their own way". And even later when it's all calm they will joke how it was "your of someone else's fault". Never ever theirs as they're never ever wrong!

Hard for us to understand; but then its hard for them to understand us to.

Surprised a couple of commentators on this thread can't even be arsed to watch 30 seconds into the 90 second video where it clearly shows (in magnified slo-motion) a member of the larger group punching the victim's friend, which leads to the mob fight....and it's shown again, clear as day,  at 1.24.

At least watch the whole bloody video before spouting off.

Special mention to the little shit putting the boot in at 1.07 !

You can only say that if you know what made him take that first swing. No one is really assessing blame here anyway, the issue is how fights here always end up dirty, as by western ideals.

So...

How was the squid?
