Wat Sanku, Hot, Chiang Mai

It would be good to list the places in Thailand that offer meditation courses, don't you think?

I'll put in the two I know:

Wat Kow Tahm on Koh Phangan offers 10 day meditation retreats

as does Wat Suan Mokh in Chaiya, both taught in English.

See the pinned topic in this sub-forum entitled "Goto first unreadPinned: A Guide To Buddhist Monasteries/meditation Centres/study Groups"

:D

then I hope sabaijai has added this one to it as well :D

I saw a notice in the Bangkok Post the other for a one day meditation course --not sure how much good that would do :o but would be interested if there were many 3-5 day courses going on.

You may want to check out Wat Mahathat, I think you can stay in Section 5 (where they offer meditation instruction in English) for pretty much as long as you want. My buddy knows one of the teachers very well, and could possibly help you get the ball rolling. This is the same temple I recommended you to check out in the other thread regarding monk chat. But I thought you were all the way down in Koh Phangan?

Precisely the need for something shorter. Perhaps on one of my yearly trips up north :o

Also, I have a friend who is looking to learn some meditation techniques but I know he couldn't handle the hard core 10 days no talking etc of the retreat here or in Chaiya.

Yes they're both listed in the Meditation Temples of Thailand link posted to the top of this subforum. Wat Khao Tham is an interesting case since it's not a true wat (unfulfilled quorum of monks; not even an abbot) and the instructors are farang. I haven't been to Wat Suanmok since Ven Buddhadasa passed away in '93, first stayed there in '81 for several months. Buddhadasa's vice abbot, Ven Aj Pho, is now in charge.

The Vipassana society has courses (mostly 10 day intensives, 9 days silent) in Prachinburi, Phitsanulok & Konkaen (& lots more outside Thailand, although I hear the facilities at the Thai centres are better than most in the region). http://www.dhamma.org/

They describe their teachings as 'non-secular', but it seemed pretty Buddhist to me...

Wow this photo brought back some memories!

Suan Mokh

This was about the time I was at the temple doing meditation in 1987. In fact a good friend of mine that was there with me came to see me just last week.
