Thais cool tempers over ‘misunderstanding'

BANGKOK: -- The Thai government moved quickly Tuesday to pre-empt a new round of anti-Thai rioting in Cambodia, insisting the Thai people do not have designs on the famed temples of Angkor Wat.

"This is a misunderstanding by the Cambodians," said Thai Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai in reaction to reports of rising anti-Thai feeling in Cambodia.

Several hundred Cambodian factory workers demonstrated in Phnom Penh last Thursday, venting their outrage at a remark attributed to a Thai garment inspector at the Suntex textile factory in the Cambodian capital. She suggested Thais did not accept Cambodia's ownership of the thousand-year-old temple complex of Angkor Wat.

A similar remark in January 2003, falsely attributed to a Thai television actress, triggered a night of violent anti-Thai rioting in Phnom Penh in which the Thai embassy and dozens of Thai-owned hotels and other businesses were burned and looted.
