This morning I was served coffee with a gold spoon!!

Over the years in Thailand I have noticed this practice quite often. Gold colored utensils and even dishes. Let us call this ignorance as businesses try to impress their customers.

Simply put. The gold color is commonly Cadmium alloy plating. Highly toxic and accumulative. The spoon this morning was almost certainly a Lead alloy plated with Cadmium. DO NOT TAKE THE CHANCE. Reject any food with suspect utensils or dishes.

The rules of thumb. Gold colored: assume Cadmium plating. The metal is heavy: Lead alloy. If it heavier than steel and/or can be bent easily, it doesn't belong anywhere near your food.

Speaking as a person suffering from acute nerve damage from lead exposure 50 years ago, these metals accumulate in the body. I had a bone test last year that revealed 'significant' lead was still present.

Agreed, but then life is toxic, as well.

I used to gas weld cadmium plated components and blow out brake drums with compressed air ( asbestos dust ), so I'm not surprised I've had a few chronic health problems in my life.

However, back then no one knew what we were doing was bad for us.

PS, on the farm I used to spray 245T only wearing a pair of shorts. It's a wonder I am still alive and functioning.

Just dont chew on the utensils and you will  be ok. Take a look  at the hygiene standards in their kitchen , that will really give you  something to worry about.
