It seems that people from the UK think that there is only one Thai consulate here. The one in Hull. There are also consulates in Glagow, Belfast, Birmingham and Cardiff. If anyone needs phone number and addresses, just ask.

Yes but do they all give you the same info.

I am from Scotland - age 54 - now have Thai bank account and have transferred the £12,000 or approx 840,000 bt and when I asked at Glasgow re Retirement Visa I was told you had to be 55 so she would only grant a 60 day tourist Visa however said I could extend for further 30 days in BKK ?

55 in July so not a great problem but what is right 50 or 55 ?

Any advice appreciated and I posted this in case anyone else has had any discrepancies.

The correct age to apply for an Non Immigrant O Visa based on retirement is 50.

It used to be 55 a few years back until the rules were relaxed.

Just a cautionary note:

If she is trying to get an O-A visa, commonly known as a retirement visa, in the UK then I believe that she will have to deal with the Royal Thai Embassy in London. Unless the rules have changed recently the honourary consulates are not allowed to issue this type of visa.

Is there a difference then between a Non Immigrant O Visa based on retirement at 50. and an O-A visa I only asked about a retirement visa PERIOD I did not say which one ?

Should I have said " I wish a Non Immigrant O Visa based on retirement at 50 to her."?

Thanks in advance.

If you want a non immigrant O visa the usual reason provided is to check on possibility of retirement (you want to spend some time in Thailand to decide). You then can use that visa to obtain retirement extensions from Immigration in Thailand with no further contact required with Consulates. But you can also just take a tourist visa and do the same thing with an extra 2,000 baht step involved - with more than 3 weeks remaining you request change of visa and after that approved you will be able to do the extensions of stay. Again this is done in Thailand at an immigration office.

The non immigrant O-A is a special (approved) one year stay visa that you obtain in home country and provides a one year permitted to stay stamp when you enter Thailand. Several papers (medical-police report) are additional to normal in country requirements but the money can still be in your home country bank account. In following years you extend as per para one.

Lopburi thanks for mentioning the Oa visa.

I was going to get the non O from Hull but now may apply for the Oa from the embassy in London

Am I right in thinking that obtaining this visa in the Uk prior to entering Thailand will allow me some inport tax concessions when moving my home to Thailand in the company of my Thai wife?

No. Retirement does not qualify for duty free import. If London provides a multi entry type O-A visa it does have the advantage of not needing a re-entry permit for first year travel and a new entry the day before the 1st year is up would provide another one year permitted to stay stamp.

Regards the additional papers required, just pick up a police clearance form at the local police station but you may have to wait up to 6 weeks for this be processed. Other items including bank statement, marriage certificate (for dependant spouse), etc. may also have to notorised, so it would be best to check with the embassy beforehand.

Is this "police clearance form" the same as police data request form as that is what Ihave asked for and paid £10 to Strathclydes finest.

On form may have to wait up to 40 days ( as you said approx 6 weeks) so maybe the same form ?? :o

Same form. I think it's worth the extra effort and paper work to obtain the O-A type visa. When you arrive at Bangkok airport immigration, they will stamp your passport with a 1 year permit to stay (nice feeling). After 90 days, you have to report your address (on form TM47) to your nearest immigration office. For the first occasion, you should report in person but later reports can be sent by registered mail.

Khom.
