Dual pricing: What happened when a Thai was charged the ‘farang price’

The further I get from touristy areas, the less likely it is to get ripped off by double-pricing.  One of my favorite places to visit is Shan State, Burma.  I can go in to any restaurant there, and not worry about double-pricing.  Most often, I'll just show up at a place and ask for what I want, and not worry about prices, because they're fair.    It's a lot different at touristy places in Thailand, tho not near as bad as Latin America.

Some time ago we wanted to buy silk.

Wife, a friend and I went into town.

Near the shop, I was told to stay at a distance, so that they could check the real price.

Then they called me over, to help choose.

My wife was - rightfully - ahamed for her country, while her friend kept saying "yes but we win".

Can anyone imagine performing this circus act when we take our Thai wife shopping in our home countries?

Their country their rules, you do not like it then you do not have to buy their services or you do not have to live there. These rules were in effect long before most of you moved there

That's not correct, it was possible to enter national parks at Thai prices on production of a WP or Thai driving licence when most of us got here, now it is not.

''Since Suthaporn is Thai, she should have paid THB80 (US$2.5). Manee explained that she typically charged Chinese tourists and farangs THB120 – 150 (US$3.7 – 4.7).

“I told her I’d give her discount. She refused, saying she already posted about this on Facebook,” Manee said.

“You know how expensive the rent is here. I don’t wanna talk about it,” she said.

Manee added that her stall doesn’t have a Thai price menu, but they would always tell customers there’s a Thai price available.''

Ah, the logic that lies behind dual pricing...welcome to the asylum.

Funny, I always thought the "Thai Menu" had a different connotation, more along the line of how the food is prepared than how the price is different.   So if I take the girl to say, the Pig and Whistle and she orders off the Thai menu, would she get a different price than if I had ordered the same item?  I have never seen that happen in a restaurant

Quite, however I didn't say whether I like it or not, I simply pointed out your error.
