Junta angling to delay vote again: legal expert

The possible attempt to postpone the enforcement of the MP’s election bill has signalled another election delay, said legal expert Parinya Thaewanarumitkul.
 

The text in the Constitution is clearly written – the election is to be held 150 days after the four laws essential for the election are “effective”, not “promulgated”, the law professor said.

 

If the 90 days were to be added on to the MP bill, then an election postponement could be expected, he said.

 

“I view that this is another way to do it if [they] don’t want the vote to happen,” Parinya said. “It was marked before as November 2018, but if the enforcement date is set [that way] then the voting is delayed.”

 

He said this was a serious issue. Although some people may think that democracy is not all about the election, voting was intertwined with the charter, he said.

 

The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) could stay in power until the new government was in place, he added. But the NCPO would be questioned and there would be pressure on it, especially given that it is on its decline, he said.

It doesn't take a legal "expert" to work this out, it's been pretty obvious to all on TVF since 2014 :)

Best thing Thai people who want an election can do is to keep talking about 'the election'. Keep talking about it like you actually take the PM's word as gospel. Plan for it like there's no chance it ain't gonna happen, because the PM said it would. That will make the PM more at ease and feel less likely to announce a delay too soon. The longer he keeps quiet about the delay, the harder it makes it to be delayed. At the very least, he loses even more credibility than he would have done if he'd just been honest about the delay sooner. 

 

Put a big digital clock in the centre of the city with how many days, hours, minutes and seconds to the big election. Say stuff like, "there will definitely will an election because the PM said it. He would never lie to us or trick us. He wants an election. He said so", etc, etc, etc.

Wonderful idea but it will most likely vanish like the 1932 plaque that honored democracy.  The yet undefined "Thai Democracy" is what is now fashionable with "cool kids" junta lovers and those running the country.  There is the lingering threat of attitude adjustments as well.  Bullies find fault and will oppress.   

Judging by what has happened with thd lottery -   correct price, 80 baht -  but now prices going up to 100 baht and more -  this government is full of promises  but can't deliver on real stuff. The election is really big  stuff and they can't or won't deliver.

Charter to change the voting paper to : 

Do you want the current PM to continue in his role ? 

Do you not want the PM not to continue in his role

One would suspect while its raining watches and trinkets delays are inevitable in true unelected fashion.

What Prayut should be doing is looking for a way to get off the tiger's back without getting bitten and maybe history will judge him as something else other than just another petty military dictator in a long line of them here...though getting late in the day now for that and the boat might have already sailed on it. However, he's got too high on the power and can't let go...just like all the other power hungry megalomaniacs in the world.

They will angle and dangle till they see just what balls the people have......................

Need to do a few more populist policies for the poor of Issan,

in the hope it translates into votes,like it did for Thaksin,better

to use taxpayers money for this than your own,when they feel

that everything is in place,and they feel they may have a chance

of winning an election......there will be one,but not before.

Are you sure about that? How can you be sure what is being discussed or happening in the far reaches of north-eastern Thailand?

He lives in the now and gives little thought to the future.  He is the perfect proxy.  Prim has warned him publicly, and it is just getting more embarrassing having him around.  Most likely, once the super rich have finished with their overseas acquisitions,  he will get a phone call telling him to move on.

Yes I wonder what happened to the plaque, they have been very quite about it for months now. I know Thais forget things fast, but forgetting the Democracy plaque is strange.

It smells fishy when the Junta is angling.

Why does it have to be widely known, what is the acid test for this?

 

Once it is print then it is up to politicians to become aware of the laws. 'Print the laws and they will come'.

 

Utter hogwash.

People of Thailand can decide if they have had enough of the Junta lead by someone who was only going to be there 6 months when first smashed Democratic Rule!

There is no doubt they will try to delay the election, and if they are allowed to proceed, will attempt to install their own man. I think the BBC put it really well last year, when they wrote an editorial theorizing that the military has lost any moral support for another coup, due to the fact that they no longer have the great man to throw his support behind them, leaving the people to say we are ok with this. Therefore they surmised that we have seen the last peaceful coup, in the history of the nation. I believe that, and I think they know that. Therefore, they will try to hang onto power into the foreseeable future. Also, there are such fortunes being earned right now, that the top guys do not want to let that gravy train go. 

Power intoxicates men. When a man is intoxicated by alcohol, he can recover, but when intoxicated by power, he seldom recovers.

And...? They can do what they want at any time they want. "They" are the law.  If they write something then decide not to do it, nobody has any recourse to enforce it.

So just people in he far reaches of North-Eastern Thailand give a f#*@? You'll probably find people in ALL parts of Thailand that don't like the current mob. Not everything in this county is "Isaan vs. The rest of Thailand"

I left out Chiang Mai where just based on history the sentiment is likely to be even stronger
