Siem Reap city authorities issued a letter on Friday, asking all residents, markets, hotels, and guesthouses to control the disposal of trash and divide it properly. Siem Reap city governor So Platong said residents should not throw trash in the street or burn it, but put it in trash bins instead.

Mr Platong said authorities will deploy officials to fine anyone who does not obey the rules. The fine will be 10,000 riel, or about $2.50. “Authorities hope all residents and owners will obey this letter,” he said. Noun Malin, a resident of the city, applauded the letter and its content.

“Some people throw their trash anywhere, but not when the authorities are watching,” she said. On January 14, Siem Reap city authorities banned vehicles from the popular Pub Street from 5pm to 2am in order to ease congestion along the road and allow pedestrians to easily move between venues.
