Amaury Rigaud is escorted by police Monday in Phichit province.

PHICHIT — A Frenchman confessed Tuesday to cutting the throat of his Thai lover’s Italian husband, police said.

Amaury Rigaud this morning said he was aided in the crime by Rujira Iemlamai – de Stefani’s wife. His confession came after the suspects turned on each other the day before, accusing the other of the crime.

He must have been told his sentence would be halved

if he admitted to the murder,or was it the kettle of boiling

water down his trousers that clinched it .

Cops here have a tendency to say that any suspect they arrest has "confessed." whether it is true or not. At least in this case they pretty certainly have the right two in custody and also safe to say neither will be walking the streets again for a very long time. Very nasty case.

In Thailand a person is technically guilty until proven innocent and unless is able to prove their innocence it becomes more viable to plead guilty for a lesser sentence.

This case shows how easily foreigners in Thailand can sometimes get stuck up a tree and not know how to climb back down again. His girlfriend slashed his face with a knife and still he stuck around, only to get caught up in this tragic mess? There's definitely something about Thailand, perhaps just all the counter-intuitive stuff which goes on here, which makes it easy for people to become disoriented and abandon their better judgement. Not saying he shouldn't be punished, but I actually feel sorry for this guy in many ways.

Actually, he looks a little bit more relaxed after confessing. See, what telling the truth can do to a person.

"a scar running diagonally across Rigaud’s face, Tawatchai said it was the result of Rujira once slashing his face with a knife."
Seems like they had a perfect relationship too.

I'm not excusing their actions, however, motives/ intent isn't  usually black and white -- the answer is almost always "grey". Passion, delusions and rage trump IQ especially if childhood trauma hasn't been sufficiently addressed.

Agreed. Our ego is on a constant feeding frenzy here.

What's wrong with these people? Why would you want to be with someone who's done that (assuming that the claim was true). Why would you want to pay 100,000 to buy a not-especially-young-and-attractive woman from another man? And why would you risk destroying your life to get that woman?

Extremely interesting and insightful observation which I had never heard before. I might add to your comment by noting that Thais, especially Thai women, seem to have a gift for granting that ego a long leash which can sometimes get the doggie into serious trouble. Thank you again for sharing that observation.

Offer enough money then maybe he will , but he was killing for money so wont help him in this case. That money already in the police pockets.

I don't think anybody has never confessed to a crime here. It's standard procedure to sing like a canary within a few days.

Because they halve the sentence if they confess.

Not that I've ever been interrogated by the Thai police for murder or anything, but to all the posters who pop up on these crime threads speculating that the police are waterboarding, sticking bamboo slivers under fingernails, or beating suspects with rubber truncheons until they confess, I think you may be underestimating Thai police interrogation skills, and their ability to verbally coax a confession out of a culprit simply by confronting them with evidence.

I mean, think about it. Suppose you're sitting in the Phichit police station adamantly denying you murdered someone, and the nine cops gathered for the interrogation simultaneously burst into laughter and tell you your bloody fingerprints have been found on the murder weapon, what are you gonna do? Chances are you're gonna confess. You ever notice how the cops here seem to comfort the criminal (putting their hands on their shoulders, patting them on the back, smiling, giving them understanding looks)? It's all done to lower the criminal's sense of guilt in order to get them to confess. That's the technique thats most often used here, not bludgeoning suspects into false confessions.
