A Silom jewelry designer went to Yannawa police early this morning to report an incident that happened as he was driving his Mazda 2 along Charoen Krung Soi 63.

Naruphon Saenbunreuang, 34, said he was following a song thaew (baht bus) that stopped to let passengers get off. At that moment a woman aged somewhere between 30 and 50 jumped off the vehicle and fell in front of his car.

She pretended that she had been hit and when she had got an audience she rapped on his window demanding 100 baht. She threw a coin damaging the bonnet of his car.

He refused to get out saying that he had a dash cam and there was no way that he had hit her. He drove off as he was in a rush to pick up his wife and child at a hospital.

The police agreed there was no collision when he went to make the report and they saw the clip.

Now they have gone to the area to find out what the woman was up to.

No charges or claims have yet been made.

Thaivisa notes that people making false claims of being hit in accidents have been rife in places like China and now the con is creeping in to Thailand.

These sorts of scams happen everywhere, when I was a child my father used to drive to London to work very early, he saw a women hitch hiking and being the kind soul that he was he stopped and offered her a lift, after driving for 10 minuets she ripped open her blouse and said if he didn't give her 2 pounds (my father earned 10 pounds a week at that time) she would go to the police and say he tried to rape her. He saved her the trouble by driving to the next police station and pulled her kicking and screaming up to the charge desk, her protests didn't help her as the police had 30 or so complaints from other drivers she had conned.

Either the dash cam date needs updating or this is very old news.

Setting the date and time is obviously beyond the ability of most Thais, judging from the number we see on TV. They are either incompetent, too lazy or don't realise how having the right date and time could be crucial in a dispute. Or all three.
