I lived in Manhattan for 6 years, 5 E 22nd St, right in the belly of the beast.  I love Isaan and the quiet life.  Funny what thirty years does to your energy level

I grew up in a German city with 34,000 Germans ( well almost..) and even more American soldiers in two "Barracks". Cities like Munich and Berlin were huge for me when I was driving.

But after driving in Bangkok with a pick up truck and a motorcycle, the German cities became towns for me, easy to drive through.

If you can make it in Bangkok, you can make it everywhere. :stoner:

Can rednecks settle in NY nowadays - what is the world coming to? Nobody would want to move to a farm in Montana. your analogy is incongruous.

Members who like your post would be welcome to explain its meaning to me???

Not trying to split hairs now, but what people who're living in New York want and what farmers in Montana wouldn't want is a strange example/ Plenty of farmers from Montana might be much happier to live in New York, of course having the right job/ friends, etc...

Not all farmers are simple people who couldn't live in a big city. And that's the same in Thailand. A lot of people with the right skills for a particular job who find a decent job in Bangkok, might fall in love with the city life and stay there forever. And then it's hard for them to go back to their rural life. It's sad that most people in Isaan don't have factories to work in,  so there're not too many possible jobs just because the government doesn't care about the little ones.

Unfortunately, does the little man not have the chance to read different stuff on the internet that would open their eyes. But they're getting there, just a matter of time.

You make it sound as if farmers were doing what they are doing because they have no other choice...

And you don't mention the opposite choice, which is the issue here: people having a good job in a big city and enjoying it, yet leaving it all for farming.

Having said that, I think there are practical reasons for why there are no factories in Isaan, but also other, more insidious, reasons.

As is the case in most countries with slave or semi-slave labor, it is better for the corporations to keep their workers close to the factories and far from home at all time...having them eating and sleeping on site being the best...

Being far away from home, isolated and with little money in the pocket, they are less likely to leave.

Try to open a big factory in Sisaket and you will see the turnover!

Posters above are missing the point!

The issue is about "working" here or there, not about "liking" or "having the right".

For example, someone having a good job in Hong Kong and enjoying it, may very well like very much the Maldives and visit them as often as possible.

Yet, it doesn't mean that this person is going to drop everything in Hong Kong in order to become a fisherman in the Maldives!

Maybe later in life, this person will retire in the Maldives, but not before.

My analogy with the retailer in New York and the farmer in Montana is similar...they are unlikely to trade places, not because they can't, but simply because they don't want.

Now, if your experience is different and that you know many people working in a big city willing to quit and go farming or fishing, as a permanent job and not for fun, your input is welcome...

Nice read. It seems like Awa (OP) lives about 20 km from my girlfriends family.

I visited them first time in January. Stayed for 3 days.

Awa, what do you think about the food? I like Thai food, but the local food here was pretty awful.

I like both bangkok food (the THAI food for general) and Isaan food. BKK food just more fancy and involved plenty of seafood, but Isaan food relies on "land material". Maybe I'm asian so Isaan food the taste is quite similar to some chinese dishes (except chinese we cook everything, rarely to eat something raw).

Some fresh internet news for you.

I have 3BB (a major internet provider in the country) at my home right now, which is not very far from yours, also in a village in Sisaket province.

Upon request, they will bring a line to my house, and my neighbor's.

Installation is free, then they charge monthly depending on the requested speed (100, 200 or 300 MB download speed) at a rate starting from 750 baht up to 1,000 baht or so.

The connection will be made within one month.

Hi everyone, I just came back from Kantharalak. Had a really good time there, but the rice season already passed, I didn't have much work to do in the farm (just take care of some rubber trees, sell some chickens and ducks). I wanted to post the photos during the time at there but the mobile version of the forum didn't allow me to upload images directly from phone so I waited until i come back to share everything to you guys!

I didn't check with TOT for internet yet, my gf said it's too early to concern that since we are not living there in the coming few years. She can make call for enquiry anytime so for now I just leave it for future.

The temperature changes from morning - afternoon - night is huge, morning and night are really chill, but in afternoon the sun is killing. Her family usually only work in morning or after 3pm, in the hottest time period they will just eat and nap.

Let's look at my photos! imageproxy.php?img=&key=3bccf9db2954ff32imageproxy.php?img=&key=3bccf9db2954ff32imageproxy.php?img=&key=3bccf9db2954ff32imageproxy.php?img=&key=3bccf9db2954ff32imageproxy.php?img=&key=3bccf9db2954ff32

Looks like you are in tambon Pupha Mok then. That would place you about 10km from ThaiV member Bergen who is well-known to many of us on here. His (or technically his wife's) farmstay, 'Suan Loong Daeng' is well worth a look - you can check it out on Google - particularly as you are into farming. A load of rai there under different crops as well as a sometime bar with good pool table.

Hat Samran is close to where to are Awa Shuen, and a nice spot for picnic.....
