Trump's military parade could cost up to $30 million-budget chief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The military parade that President Donald Trump wants to stage, likely in Washington, would cost U.S. taxpayers up to $30 million, the White House budget chief said on Wednesday in remarks on the administration's fiscal 2019 spending plan.

Mick Mulvaney, who in a congressional hearing continued a broad defence of the $4.4-trillion plan he began earlier this week, was asked about the parade, which Trump's spending plan does not break out as a specific item.

"The estimates I’ve seen, they’re very preliminary, is between $10 million and $30 million, depending upon the length," said Mulvaney, director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB). "Obviously an hour parade is different from a five-hour parade in terms of the cost and the equipment and those types of things."

According to media reports, Trump came up with the idea of showing off U.S. military might after a 2017 trip to France when he and French President Emmanuel Macron reviewed that country's defence forces marching down the Avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Trump ordered the Defense Department to look into a comparable display of military might that he could review.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said last week he believed Trump wants Washington to host the parade but left open the possibility that it could be staged elsewhere.

Critics have ridiculed the idea of a costly display of troops and weapons at a time when the Pentagon is struggling to cover the expenses of training, support and personnel.

Democratic Representative Barbara Lee questioned Mulvaney at a House of Representatives Budget Committee hearing about the costs. She noted, "You know the parade is very similar to those held in authoritarian countries like North Korea."

Mulvaney said at the hearing, "We've actually had many military parades in this country before. I think we had one as recently as the 1990s, and maybe one more recently than that."

MULVANEY SAYS BACKS BUDGET

Ahead of Mulvaney's testimony, Republican committee Chairman Steve Womack asked about the deficit impact of Trump's spending plan. Mulvaney faced similar inquiries earlier this week.

At a Senate panel hearing on Tuesday, he was asked if he would vote for the Trump spending plan if he were still in Congress, which he was before Trump hired him to run OMB.

"I probably would have found enough shortcomings in this to vote against it," Mulvaney said at the time.

On Wednesday, Mulvaney walked that back, telling the House panel he thought he had been asked not about Trump's budget, but about a narrower two-year spending-caps deal.

“I read in the newspapers this morning that someone reported that I wouldn’t support this budget if I were in Congress. That is absolutely false,” Mulvaney said. “I absolutely, without reservation, support this budget."

There are military parades, thousands, each year in the US.  They take place in towns and cities, and feature smiling old men in 1960's convertibles, and embellished with cheerleaders, confetti, babies, and other locals.  No problem with that, except for having to sweep up all the confetti and trash afterwards.

Trump's idea of a military parade in DC is ridiculous in comparison.  Everyone outside of the Oval Office will ridicule its posturing.  Note: whenever feds make an estimate of something's cost, it's alway costs 2 to 5 times more.   It's happening with the ridiculous wall, and....

Just maintaining that US's nukes aren't leaking costs $70 million/year. ....for a few people to walk around silos with geiger counters.

Yes and all the Trump adepts can wave their 2 little USA flags in the air shouting USA, USA, USA. Don't forget to dress in USA flag designed clothes too.

It would make the USA look weak, not strong.

So how many "trump" Florida golf weekends would pay for the "trump" self glorification parade?

Trump's a millionaire, right??? (If you forget about all those past bankruptcies and tax issues...)

If he wants his Russia, China, North Korea style military parade so bad, let him pay for it himself out of pocket change...  I'm sure he's got a spare $10-$30 million laying around somewhere....

Or if not, he could always raise the rent/lease prices at Trump Towers, where all the foreign governments and business entities are paying influence peddling money to his company every month. Deal done, no problem.

Are you sure standing up while the whole parade passes by won't negatively affect the man-child's painful bone spur condition?

Sen. Tammy Duckworth had an interesting take on that lately....

Quote

She’s even tried beating Trump at his own nickname game, dubbing the president “Cadet Bone Spurs” – a reference to his Vietnam War draft deferment.

Duckworth, who lost both her legs and the partial use of her right arm when serving in the Iraq War in 2004, explained the origins of that moniker: “I just think it’s descriptive. I think bullies need to have a taste of their own medicine, and he is a bully. And you stand up to bullies.”

“He was a cadet in a prep school,” she said. “And the bone spurs thing, I just think it’s ironic that you have an injury that is so severe it keeps you out of serving your country, but you don’t remember which foot it was in, or whether it was in both feet.”

Let's see if I can even begin to recap this:

We've got a guy who..

--cheated his way out of the Vietnam war

--has a checkered business past of bankruptcies and tax issues

--has been accused of assault and similar by something like 16 women

--his lawyer recently paid a $130,000 settlement to a porn star with whom Trump allegedly had an affair.

--he and/or others in his campaign and administration may have colluded with the Russians to influence the Presidential election, and then engaged in obstruction of justice in trying to hinder the investigation into that by firing the FBI director --  both of which are the subject of a current government investigation.

--He has a pretty well documented pattern and habit of being a liar and a bully who demeans anyone who tries to oppose him.

--He's a Republican in name who just put forward a federal budget that's going to balloon the federal deficit, while at the same time giving huge tax cuts to corporations.

And this is the guy Americans elected as President of the United States???

So, you really think KJU doesn't know how strong the US is? Tell how that parade is worth it to the next vet you see who cannot get the medical care he needs.

if this parade happens then Trump checks 9 out of 10 boxes for the criteria of a dictator. If he starts wearing a military uniform then he will be 10/10, wait for it.

You gotta love it when a coward who got five deferments, excusing him from venturing into harms way, and fighting for his nation, drums up the fervor for the military. A uniform would be fitting, for this charlatan. Everything else about him is fake. Why not a uniform for a man who not only has never served his nation, but would wet his pants, at the very sound of live ammunition firing.

I can't help but be amused

It doesn't surprise me that Donald Trump would want a military parade...

-It's flashy

-It's expensive

-It is pointless

-It's tacky

- It's a way to brag and inflate one's self-worth without any actual substance.

Haha this pretty much is definition of Donald Trump!

Apparently so.... Any more questions? The people have spoken.... Don't like it?  You'll have another chance to have your say in a couple of years.

The vet thing is so overblown. Change the term to cannon fodder and get it into perspective.

The government wants you to fight for their ideology but don't care about the consequences..... Been like this for hundreds of years.

Proud vet..... Idiot in my book. Sure you may get a pension..why I do not know....i bet it won't  be around for ever.

Though I stand 6'2", my equipment is small, and quite inferior for a man of my stature. Therefore, I have carried that insecurity, lack of self esteem, and lack of self love with me since I was a young man. Women have commented on my lack of prowess often. It is one of the reasons why I am such an incredible blowhard, and why I need to brag, and engage in bluster every time I open my foul mouth. As everyone knows, everything I say is false, so when I brag about things like my equipment, of course that is false too. Like my hands, everything else is small. I am constantly striving to make up for that in everything I do and say.

So, this is one of the reasons I need a parade. I do not care how much it costs. I think you can tell by now, the deficit and balancing the budget mean nothing to me. Doing what is right for the nation means nothing to me. Always count on me to do the wrong thing. That is just who I am. I cannot help it. The French president had a very big parade. So, I need one too. Forget about the fact that their parade commemorated the anniversary of the year the US got involved in WWI. That is not important. History is not important. The only thing in this world that is important is me, and what I want and what I say. You need to listen. I am the preeminent authority and expert on everything.

Yes I agree...

A lot of your posts seem to reflect this.

Especially the interminable rants about the idiots who can't drive and then blame their shortcomings on the police
