The army commander-in-chief has admitted that it is beyond the capability of Thai authorities to arrest fugitive former prime ministers Thaksin and Yingluck Shinawatra and that they have to rely on the help from the Interpol.

The army chief, General Chalermchai Sitthisart, said that, in order to arrest the two fugitives, there were several protocols that the Thai police would have to follow and some of them were beyond the capability of the Thai police and, hence, the need for coordination with the Interpol.

General Chalermchai will fly to Singapore tomorrow, which coincide with the visit to the island state by the two former prime ministers. He said he didn’t want people to speculate that he will meet with the duo which is untrue.

Interpol has no agents than can arrest. The organization functions as an administrative liaison among the law enforcement agencies of the member countries, providing communications and database assistance.

Huh? So if the USA orders Interpol to arrest a serial killer on the run than they can't arrest him when he's seen passing a border? That's new for me.

what idiocy; what in the world does the army commander in chief have to do with any of this ?

and it goes to the heart of thai thinking about other countries;

they don't;

thailand is quick to assert their own sovereignty but they seem to think that all other countries are thai provinces

He was simply explaining the difficulties the RTP have in these two cases prior to leaving for Singapore where the two crooks were expected to be also.

What was it in that report that indicated that "Thailand thinks other countries are Thai provinces"?

Oh, so the timing IS just a coincidence then? Didn't notice him saying why he was going there mind.

Additionally, if they are serious about repatriation, why are they not pushing Interpol with every ounce of their energy?

Dont bother, we all know the answer.

Do we?  What is it that Interpol can do that it hasn't done already if pushed more by Thailand?

Just when you thought there were enough empty uniforms blowing their trumpets, here comes another one brimming with self-importance.

Not so much "brimming with self-importance" as brimming with an explanation that a lot of Thaivisa members would do well to take notice of.

That's right, no countries can order Interpol to make arrests because Interpol does not make arrests.

She will be in Singapore next few days. Let’s see how much sway and cooperation from your Asean brothers. I think zilch.

As there is no extradition treaty between Singapore and Thailand It's doubtful that Thai authorities will be expecting any co-operation!

That’s right although Thai authority can request for Singapore to hand over both using diplomatic relationship. Doubt that will work too as Singapore only will oblige from a legal standpoint.

Army commander urges all to help maintain peace

BANGKOK, 20th February 2018 (NNT) – The army commander is urging all groups to refrain from joining any movement that may disrupt peace in the country.

Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, Gen. Chalermchai Sittisart said on Monday that his trip to Singapore on Tuesday, which coincides with the reported plan of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to visit the city state, should not be interpreted as being any part of a covert meeting.

Gen. Chalermchai confirmed that his trip has been planned without any suggestion of allowing for an encounter with the former premier.

He added that it is not the responsibility of the Thai army to track down the whereabouts of Mr. Thaksin but rather the role of other agencies.

Gen. Chalermchai went on to say that the National Council for Peace and Order has relaxed the control of politicians because of the trust in the conscience of Thai people to maintain peace.

His comment was in response to a report that members of the Pheu Thai Party have been planning overseas trips to meet Mr. Thaksin.
