Driver killed, 8 passengers hurt in bus crash in Khon Kaen

By The Nation

A Khon Kaen-Loei bus fell from a three-metre-high bridge in Khon Kaen on Tuesday morning, killing the driver and injuring eight passengers.

Police said the bus crashed into a rail on the Pha Nok Khao bridge linking Khon Kaen’s Chomphu district and Loei’s Phu Kradung district at 6.30am and fell down to a dry creek below.

Rescuers had to douse the bus with water from a fire engine because there was a gas leakage.

They took about half an hour to remove the injured passengers from the bus. The passengers were identified as Aor Kaewduang, 22, Bungrat Anphakdee, 71, Boonmee Wongkhamphui, 57, Wilailak Toso, 22, Thitirat Thnipithak, 62, Si Simamala, 33, Patcharaporn Wongkhamphui, 33, and Benjaporn Polchan, 22.

They were rushed to the Phu Kradueng Hospital.

The body of the driver was found outside the bus. He was identified as Boonmee Upama, 52.

Brake failure ?   Fell asleep ?  Suicide ?

6:30 AM, already "some" daylight.

Straight road in good condition but a narrow bridge.

Main witness is dead.

Let's wait whether a passenger knows what happened.

All speculation until then.

Could have been oncoming traffic from a forbidden overtaking?

Bus trying to avoid frontal collision?

30 km from our place.

Khon Kaen’s Chomphu district and Loei’s Phu Kradung district

For the books: it's bordering Chum Phae district not Si Chomphu on highway 201.

No seat belt?

Have you ever seen a bus driver wearing a seat belt?

I don't know the legal situation in Thailand but up until a few years it was not even mandatory for commercial drivers in Germany.
