Well I don't know, however in my experiance, 38 year old American men don't just hang themselves from the bedpost.......much more to this story.....but he made it easy to ignore... Just some guy alone and depressed... In a place that fights for more babies and disregards the needs of the living. Happy Trails, lost boy....

Well , 38 year old american men do commit suicide , are you stating that they do not ?

No need to come half way across the world to hang yourself, you can do that at home.
I would guess loneliness or a broken heart was the key factor. Perhaps he thought he had a girl here but it didn't turn out that way or perhaps he thought he would have a good time but somehow he just couldn't meet up with any people he could relate to. A deserted dormitory after several days of loneliness may have been the last straw, overwhelming him.
On the other hand he could have been suffering from depression he couldn't take anymore.
Or all of the above, plus five mostly empty bottles. Poor guy.

Dormitory living at 38?? Just awful.

What experience do you have?  Do 38-year old non-Americans have more of a tendency to commit suicide?

So sad when people have to die alone, seems to happen

with older farangs ,drink, drugs, bad health,Viagra,or just

old age.

If they had been other guest's  in the hostel,he could have

talked to them, and not been in such despair to end it all.

RIP.

Although, does the alcohol intake contribute to the suicide , or do they drink a lot in order to relief the suicidal tendencies ?

it can be alcohol used to medicate pain or primary alcohol addiction that in of itself can lead to depression, despair, self loathing and suicide or be a mixed bag of both.

yeah.  check his phone records, texts, emails, etc.  He may have thought he had something good there.  But still, I am amazed at the number of apparent suicides over alleged partner issues.  I would naively expected more violence against the partner?  Or maybe they just can't find them and give it all up, completely embarrassed, ashamed, broke, etc.  Add an overdose of booze and other things and some crazy things can go through one's mind I guess

I see the standard Thai forensic examination was carried out

1. Count the empties and identify type of alcohol. (I see a foreign brand perplexed the cops here. Beer or 'whiskey'?)

2. Poke around in the ashtray and count the butts (More difficult nowadays with all this no smoking everywhere)

3. Scan the room and see if it qualifies to be described as "signs of a struggle".

JOB DONE. No need for gloves or anything. All finished in 5 minutes. Draw a conclusion and announce it definitively to the waiting press.

Perhaps people suffering from depression do not [always] cross the line to suicide when in their homelands, as some can have a bit of lucidity and may not want to burden their relatives, friends with the issue of finding the dead body ???

Being far from one's homeland, with no close friends or waypoints of life, may ease the issue and make it easier for the depressed to cross the line and commit suicide. IMHO of course.

Consequently, fleeing a gloomy country with hopes but also with one's despair, to a distant sunny land may not always be a cure for rootened pathological issues. Unless one has the cash to burn with superficial distractions or patterns that could keep the mind distracted ?...who knows...

RIP to the victim.

Or maybe, he ran out of money and had no job prospects back home.

Possible. When the proverbial hits the fan some folks become desperate when abroad. Back home they may have family or friends to turn to, but alone, far from home , things just seem so much worse.

And then when there is nothing to go back home to, it just seems to be the end.
