European Classical Music In Thailand

I wonder, where I can find classical music-CD in Bangkok. Is there any special shop for that in BKK or elsewhere in Thailand?

I am very interested in music of the Baroque - especially music of G.F. Handel -

As I am collecting CDs of Baroque opera and oratorio music, such a shop cannot be a simple CD music shop.

It should have a very good selection of Classical CDs, and not only the most famous pieces, which you can hear everyday....

Is there any shop in Bangkok, which is dealing with old music of Europe, maybe CDs, or music-instruments, or books about it, musical related printings, any association or study group, which is performing sometimes such music.......

Seems to me, European classical music is not really well known in Thailand -

Anyway if you have any information about it, please let me know.

Thank you,

Johann

they play baroque music regularly .

they also have a online shop

I would check out E-bay I buy loads of stuff from there but I am not sure how you would pay as they don't at the moment accept paypal from Thailand.

If you can why not get a friend to buy it for you in your own country?

I have never been let down and also you can buy stuff there thats not in the shops anymore and very cheap.

Thanks for all explication. It is confirming my feelings, that there is not very much around for sale of this kind of stuff in Thailand...

Anyway, I have quite a good collection here in Tokyo, just to copy my CDs and bring the copies to my condo there....

Not a problem at all, nevertheless I was interested if there is some special shop for European classical musik in Bangkok ....

Seems there is not.

Thank you,

Johann

It is possible to buy Baroque music here. Central Store Chitlom, on the 7th floor, has a limited selection. I have bought some Elizabethen Virginal music from there in the past. Prices tend to be around 700 per cd. As alot of it is imported. Apart from there, I have never come across anywhere else.

This doesn't answer your question but if you like Handel have you heard David Daniels (countertenor) Handel Oratoria Arias? I got it through Amazon in the UK and it is superb.

I have about 160 CD of G.F.Handel music......

And I should make a list of all CDs and contents....

Most countertenor recordings I have is by Drew Minter and James Bowman...

like Giulio Cesare, Rodelinda, Tolomeo, Flavio, Orlando in Italian, and

also Giulio Cesare in English, and various Oratorio, like the Occasional Oratorio for example....

Here in Japan, imported from USA there is a huge collection of G.F.Handel Baroque music available....simply said, I cannot buy all, what I like to buy....

G.F.Handel music collection is huge, maybe No. 4 of the Baroque area, after Bach, Scalatti and Teleman

http://www.radix.net/~dalila/singers/daniels.html

Quite a good page about David Daniels.....

I know, I should buy some of his recordings too....

May I ask you in return, if you ever heard Bryn Terfel as a G.F. Handel bass-singer?

I am especially interested in G.F.Handel recordings of Julianne Byrd, but now very difficult to find...

Thailand is for sure not the best place for shopping around for classical music....

Not a problem, I have possible supply from Japan...

Thank for your posting....

Best regards,

Johann

Thanks for that link, I found it very interesting. My era is more the romantic one Beethoven Mozart etc and opera but lately I have heard some Handel so rapidly learning what I have missed. You appear to have a very extensive collection of GFH.

I am in London but moving to Thailand soon. Most of my CDs are in Thailand and I will probably run up against the same problem when trying to obtain classical CDs.

This summer I will bring a lot of CDs of G.F.Handel to my condo in Jomtien.

Also must update my homepage, about all the CDs I have....totally incomplete...

In Japan as I said, there are huge collections, imported from the USA (G.F.Handel made a lot of composition in English, and native English speakers like that very much....in Continental Europe - despite he was a native German - his works are not so well known....just some general instrumental music....water music...and such simple works....

Should you look for something, let me know...many recordings have Japanese copyrights by Sony Entertainment or Toshiba Emi ....

and there are also excellent musicians, who are Japanese....

Sorry to say, Thailand still is not ready for European classical music.

About David Daniels, I think, it is really a good link, as it gives a good information about the other famous countertenors and about the Baroque Opera, including G.F. Handel...

Yes, in my home there is a lot about G.F.Handel.... not only CDs, but also DVD and Laserdiscs, informations about cembalos and organs, texts of the operas and oratorias, musical scores, Midi-Files for printout and study the melodies...any information about his life, his friends and so on.....

Thank you very much for your information,

Central Store, Chitlom, 7th floor....

This is the first time, that somebody told me, that a shop is existing, which is indeed selling European Baroque music CDs....

baht 700,- sounds maybe expensive, but indeed it is about, what we have to pay everywhere for imported CDs of that kind....

Will take a look there in July....

Thanks again,

Johann
