Crime BRN Issues Statement of Regret Over Violence in Pattani, Affirms Civilian Protection Policy
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. The Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), the most prominent insurgent group in Thailand’s deep south, has issued a formal statement expressing regret over recent violence in Pattani that led to civilian casualties. The statement reiterates the group’s position that it does not target civilians and is committed to operating within the framework of international human rights and humanitarian law. Released on 5 May, the written statement extended condolences to the families of those affected by the recent violence in the region known as Patani Darussalam. BRN declared: “We do not have a policy of attacking civilian targets,” distancing itself from the harm caused to non-combatants. The group reaffirmed its ongoing struggle for the freedom and dignity of the Patani Malay people, highlighting the right to self-determination and emphasising its intention to pursue its objectives without violating humanitarian principles. BRN strongly denied any involvement in attacks on innocent civilians and called for a transparent investigation into the recent incidents. It also urged all parties, including the Thai government and armed groups, to refrain from actions that put civilians at risk. “Our fight is for the freedom and dignity of the Patani people, not to spread fear,” the statement declared. It concluded by urging all sides to “stand together with peace and wisdom.” The statement comes amid ongoing tensions and sporadic violence in the southern border provinces, despite longstanding efforts by various stakeholders to advance peace talks in the region.
