My suggestion would be to do the leg work and check for yourself.

My experience is it is very difficult on a visa exempt.

thanks for reply, already went to several branches before posting & all wanted to see work permit!

Yes they do.

If someone tells you, you can walk into a bank with an exempt stay and get an account=fake news.

My suggestion for you may be to go to any agency.  They can assist you to open and account for a fee.

Well: when, where, what bank, branch, and name of contact person?

Also, he is asking about Visa exempt.  Not a Tourist Visa.

But, I would certainly like to hear your story..

I think it was 2008 or 2009, Kasikorn at Royal Garden, Pattaya.

Forgot the name of the contact person.

I just walked in, 30 mins later I had my account.

And I escorted a friend there too, about 2 or 3 years later, same thing.

Ok thanks good you got it back then.

I would be very surprised if you could now as policies have changed recently,  mostly work permit required.

Work permit is not a requirement at Bangkok Bank.  Their requirements are listed here;

not sure about current moment/climate, but have opened half-dozen savings accounts at different thai banks on tourist visa/visa exemption in last few years with no problems at all...yes, might have to consider a third-party!

What's the problem with the debit card not being a Visa version, they still work the same way in Thailand! I agree it is not much use outside of Thailand.

Chinese, and I guess others, are getting bank accounts on visa exemption status at many branches of Bangkok Bank, done through agents and a few bahts worth of grease.

Even get the goodies for opening a new account, currently Chelsea football shirts and other items.

Yes, that is the most assured way to go.

In 5 years it will be mostly Chinese accounts anyway, so may as well start now.

I was in Kasikorn Bank today and couldn't help but notice the 2 lovely Chinese ladies (they looked like high-end fashion models), sitting next to me. They were accompanied by an older Thai woman clutching their passports, whom I overheard tell her contact at the bank that the ladies wanted to open accounts and that they had 2 million Baht cash there with them - ready to go! I noticed one was carrying a large Central bag. Must have been the cash!
