Parental Travel Consent Letter Needed at Immigration?

Featured Replies

My daughter and her two young sons are considering coming to Thailand on a holiday, later in the year.

Her husband will not be travelling with them and she is aware that she will need a letter of consent from him to allow her to take the boys out of their country of residence which, in this case is Spain.

She has asked if Thai Immigration will need to see this letter and, if so, if she needs a Thai translation.  I suspect that the answer is 'no' in both cases but does anyone actually know?

I believe Thai immigration will have no interest in the children's mother returning with the children to home country.

I also suspect that the answer is no, but I would get the Thai translation anyway, especially if the letter of consent is in Spanish  - why take the risk when a translation costs very little?

My wife and I regularly take our Thai granddaughter on holidays to the UK. She has a 10 year visitor visa, but we always take with us a fresh letter of consent from the mother, together with all the visa application paperwork (all translated into English). Last March, for the first time, an Immigration Officer at Heathrow noticed our different surnames and gave us a bit of a grilling (rightly so IMHO). Having all the papers in English saved a lot of time and trouble.

I was asked for this letter by airport checkin in Amsterdam on return to Thailand.

So you never know.

Have them take it, I would say in English only.

Thanks for the replies.

I think that she's more concerned with being denied entry at BKK,  rather than when flying out again.

Anyway, I shall advise her to get an English translation of the document, which will probably be in Spanish.  I can't see that a Thai translation would be necessary.

Immigration will accept a document that is in English. No need for it to be translated to Thai.
