Manager said that Chiang Mai residents were being advised to stay indoors as the danger from thick smog and smoke was cranked up a notch in the northern capital.

Visibility was low and it was no longer possible to see the landmark of Doi Suthep from the downtown area - an indication that things were bad, said Manager.

The crisis is as a result of scrub burning, they said, and was getting worse all through the day yesterday, Wednesday.

They said that there were a total of 186 "hotspots" or risk areas across nine northern provinces with 23 of those in Chiang Mai alone.

Authorities were advising people at risk just to stay home out of the smog.

Every year the powers that be say this will never happen again,

but nothing changes, they are more engaged with trying to catch

smokers on the beach,or the real polluters, the vaper's !, go after

the low hanging fruit, while the forests burn.

Its also been very smoggy in Roi Et/Mahasarakham/Kalasin for the last 2-3 weeks. If I do anything involving any kind of exertion, I get pain in my chest, no different from what we used to go through in the inland suburbs of Los Angeles back in the 70's, one of the worst areas in the U.S. for pollution. Never seen it quite this bad in Isaan. One of my Thai inlaws  commented a few days ago, "Looks, like a storm is coming." I said, "No I think its air pollution." It was cold yesterday and on an hour drive saw lots of  people burning stuff,  even more than usual, my wife commented that they are trying to keep warm. I know, 75 deg. farenheit, they'll be getting the snow plows out if gets any colder.

But the photos in the OP show the same kind of sky I see these days in Isaan. Makes you wonder how much of the country is being affected by this. At any rate, this isn't just a Chiang Mai thing, its over here too.

Actually, in the night market area it was less visibly smoggy this morning than yesterday.

That's not to say it was clear, just less.
