Cambodia and Thailand are due to open an international checkpoint bordering Battambang province and Sa Kaeo province to facilitate the flow of goods across the border at the end of this month. Nguon Ratanak, Battambang provincial governor, and Porn Poth Penpas, Sa Kaeo provincial governor, held a meeting on Monday and decided to upgrade a border checkpoint, which will now be called the Kilo 13 International Checkpoint, on March 30.

Soeum Bunrith, deputy governor of Battambang province, said yesterday that the international border checkpoint was open for business yesterday but will officially open on March 30. Mr Bunrith said the new international passage would make it convenient for people to cross the border while transporting agricultural products.

The Sa Kaeo provincial governor has invited Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to attend the inauguration ceremony scheduled to take place on March 30 and also asked the Battambang provincial governor to invite Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Mr Bunrith said most products that went through the Kilo 13 checkpoint included soft drinks, cassava, black sesame, corn and metal materials, including construction materials.
