Ayutthaya’s tourist-drawing Chaiwattanaram Temple will be open till 9pm every day until April 30.

The closing time has been extended from 6.30pm as the number of tourists to the historical temple in Ayutthaya has increased significantly after the period TV series Buppesannivas went on the air last month.

Set in the Ayutthaya period, the TV series has proved a big hit and spurred its watchers’ interest in Thai history. Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam (known today as Thailand) between 1350 and 1767.

Large numbers of tourists have flooded historical sites in Ayutthaya in recent weeks.

Local police, soldiers, officials and volunteers are now mobilised to facilitate traffic and ensure tourist safety.

Officials have been dispatched to bus stations, piers and train stations in the province to ensure all vehicles comply with safety standards.
