Criminal Record

Featured Replies

Hi i am thinking of doing a TEFL course to teach in Thailand but the problem is i have a criminal record, i have never been in jail and was only a caution for the offence. Would this stop me from working in thailand? and also Would this stop me from applying for permanent reidency?

i appreciate any help thank you.

Stefanfed, I'll move your inquiry to the Teaching in Thailand forum here.

Your statement is a wee bit confusing: a criminal record, not in jail, only a caution. Does that mean you were not convicted of any misdemeanor or felony? Care to tell us what country?

There are one or two threads here about criminal background checks; here's one:

If you're from the UK, here's another discussion thread:

But in Thailand, you never really know what the rules are. Never.

I was never convicted for the offence but because i was cautioned i will have a criminal record

If you have already checked the links you were given and still want to teach in LOS its more of a sanity check than a criminal record check you need. That said you need to apply for a "subject access" check, once again details on those threads, on the form you can tick the box that says "show convictions only" and thats your problem solved as a caution is not a conviction.

Important to note that under these criteria Ian Huntley who went onto murder 2 kids whilst employed as a school caretaker in Soham Cambridge would also emerge with a clean record. The "enhanced" check not available to individuals or Thailand.

And whilst depriving Thailand of teachers because of the problems involved (at least 6-8 weeks processing) this is supposed to protect kids ? :o
