Songkran revelers will be allowed to ride on the back of a pickup truck, but will not be allowed to splash water from the truck on main roads as part of the Royal Thai Police’s safety measure guideline to be applied nationwide during Songkran festival.

RTP spokesman Pol Gen Veerachai Songmetta said Tuesday that said the guideline had been distributed to all police units nationwide for implementation, with main focus on safe travelling, convenience in travelling and the opening up of road space to facilitate travelling.

Although riding on the back of a pickup truck is permissible, he said police on the spot could exercise their discretion to give a warning or to take legal action if they find the conduct of the revelers or the driver may pose a threat to their own safety or the safety of the other people.

Or ride on trucks with empty barrels and pretend, then. :w00t:

Or perhaps the trucks can dump that white powder on you and you depend on the bar revellers to wash it out of your eyes.

You ask whats a tough penalty?

Normally 200 baht passed quietly over, then on your way.

Oh thought you asked "what's a trough penalty?". Not a tough one. A trough penalty refers to a penalty put into law whereby extortion of bribe is possible from a silly law or rule. :-D

Ah, that will probably be seen as "riding with criminal intent", the same as the sandwich-eating students charged with a similar offence.

They make up the rules as they go along, it keeps everything 'fluid'.

each year it is something different. I wish they would not allow ice. That is actually very rude and can cause great harm. NO ICE rule.

Agree. Hate Songkran for the ice water.

Fantastic safety measures. All deaths and accidents will surely be stopped now.

All it needs is for the Supreme Saviour to invoke Article 44 banning accidents, then we will all have a casualty-free Songkran.

Why do the Thai authorities make such ridiculous pronouncements?

Does anyone think that the Thai people are going to heed them?

Anyone?

Anyone?

The Thai authorities are the BIGGEST killer in Thailand.

It is so stupid.....I don't find words.....

Now we are just waiting for the usual depressing statistics......Day 1   xxx killed.......Day 2   xxx killed

And if by the end of the holidays only 467 were killed, the safety measures will considered yet another success for the Royal Thai Police.....:coffee1:

Let the madness and carnage start! Time to leave the country April 12-16

At least it is possible to escape Songkran - in stark contrast to the annual 31 December - 1 January ritualistic nonsense from which there is no escape whatsoever wherever on this great planet of ours you have the misfortune to find yourself!
