What is is they minimum remaining validity on a passport for a person entering Thailand? :o

A friend of mine is travelling down from Korea and wants to do a stop in Thailand on the way home. I've tried to find the answer on Thai government websites but I can't.

He has an NZ Passport and his passport expires 5 months after entry.

Different countries have different requirements. For Singapore, Malaysia and Laos, six months' remaining validity is mandatory. For Vietnam and Cambodia, the passport needs only be valid for the duration of one's stay.

Thanks to anybody in the know.

Sorry can't help for sure but asyou said a lot of countries in Asia require 6 months. It is a good idea to have that period remaining validity if travelling in the region. One never knows where the plane might have to land

For a visa the passport should have six months or more validity but for visa free entry of a NZ passport there is no requirement per below IATA guidance:

Passport (must be valid at least 30 days and in good condition)

required.

Visa not required for a max. stay of 30 days, provided

coming for touristic purposes. Extension up to 10 days is

possible. Fee THB 500.- (1 photo required).

If passport is valid less than 30 days, stay will only be

permitted up to the validity of the passport.

Note: there is a max. limit of a total of 90 days within any

6 month period.

It is recommended to hold onward/return tickets.

If holding APEC Business Travel Card together with passport:

visa not required.

Entry may be refused if of "hippy" appearance.

For more information see: For details, click here .

Visitor must hold all documents for next destination.

If being over 12 years old, visitor must also hold sufficient

funds (e.g. letter of credit, vouchers, MCO's or well-known

credit cards) to cover stay (not applicable if holding

re-entry visa).

Non-compliance with the visa regulations will result in:

- refusal and immediate deportation of passenger;

- fines for the airline of THB 20,000,-;

- overstay fine for passenger of THB 500,- per day (but not

exceeding in total THB 20,000.-).

The whole validity rule is pretty stupid anyway.

In this day and age your passport can be renewed within a few days at your embassy.

Now that's what you think, a renewel of a passport can take up to 2 month, which

most certainly exceeds the periode of the tourist visa.

Not really, I applied for a new Australian passport last Monday (22/01/07) and they will send it up to me in Pai when it arrives which they estimated at 05/02/07, two weeks.

It depends on the Embassy and the country.

Due to the new 'intelligent' passports required to enter the USA, Belgium only issues new passports in Belgium. The Embassy is only a letter box to pass on the applications to the issuing authorities in Belgium and then distribute the passports when they come back. the process when fast is 3 weeks when not can take as much as 8......

Whe i applied for a tourist visa in early December I was refused because my passport expired on Jan 22 2007. Yes - you have to have at least 6 months validity.

Regarding a new pasport, I went to the US Embassy in Bkk on the 18 Jan and my passport is now ready. It was processed in New Hampshire USA. Back in seven days.

Now, I have to find a way to go get it. The embassy won't mail it. And since my old passport has expired, I can't fly to bkk or take a train. I shall explain more of this in a new topic.

Wrong. Think about it. How would they know when you are going to leave?

For a visa to be issued the passport must have 6 months or more validity from date of visa issue.

For entry without visa there is no validity requirement but permitted to stay stamp will not be for longer than passport validity.

Not the case in my home country, they decided to renew all passports centrally, same with driver licenses. Takes at least 7 days, and this is inside the country. I don't know how long it will take if renewed outside the coutnry.

It is interesting to see how difficult some countries make it to get a new passport. :o

Makes me glad I am British. :D

Thanks for all of your replies everyone and sorry for my careless typing in the topic question :o

It looks like he'll be able to get in without having to renew his passport first.

lopburi3, did you get that from the IATA website? Handy stuff.

Thanks again,

If you are British and renew a passport early, for example six months early, the new passport that is issued will be valid 10 years and six months.

That is the only good thing I have to say about British passport renewal in Bangkok.
