Living the High Life in Pattaya

By Dan Cheeseman

Pattaya has got a bad reputation when it comes to its nightlife and to be fair some of this has some merit. But these people just don’t know the full offer. For if you travel high up onto the rooftops of many hotels you will find an environment more akin to Bangkok.

It was my wife’s birthday and so a few friends and myself headed to the Hilton rooftop for a few celebratory cocktails. Of course I could not resist the opportunity to do a quick vlog; my wife is very tolerant of my hobby and more often than not I even get her to hold my camera. This time round I gave her a break, it was her birthday after all.

I must say, if you want to impress someone, bring them to this rooftop for the sunset. It is a very chilled out vibe and the views are just stunning. I have been here a few times now and each time it puts me in a good mood.

Such a shame that they have to move the quality up in the sky, due to that it doesn´t fit in at the sleazy street level.

And then, just another fine video from "Dan the Man" :cheesy:

Perhaps you should change the streets you frequent?

I do not frequent them, as I would no longer take a step in that city. Been there, though, but today is just enough to read about the catastrophy.

I never got an invite to this event, but have marked it in my calendar for next year and will be sure to parrty crash the event along with fellow great unwashed TVF posters.

Actually if you visit anywhere if Asia with limited land supply, lots of entertainment is moved into upper floors of buildings.  Seoul, HK, and Tokyo come to mind.

Whenever did I say that it´s not moved up? I just stated that they have to move up the quality, because it doesn´t fit the street level. And that it was a shame it has to be like that.

From someone who doesn't even visit or live in the City.

So well yes it is only on upper levels and 5 Star hotels you can enjoy a good time and safe time at a bar or nice place to enjoy and not be <deleted> and stucked up in all of these beer bars with loud music and screaming thai woman and well also foroeigners ....

Such a shame that you cannot understand plain English.  It is a function of high density population in areas with restricted land.  Is that easier for you?

I understand perfectly what you are writing. Just so sad that you do not understand my point, and choose to quote my posts with irrelevant information regarding my comments.
However, if you would have been choosing to just comment the news article you would have been in the clear.

Correction must be made due to my earlier posted information: From someone who no longer frequent the city due to it´s state of decay regarding all areas.

Unless they pad your bill.  That would put a damper on the perfect high rise evening away from the alleged masses of commoners on the streets below.

Never steps foot in the city but, seemingly, just can't quit Pattaya.

Some are aroused by Pattaya bashing in addition to fascinating political whinging.

They are usually the life of the party with many friends gathered around.

Well, if you actually go up to the rooftop at Hilton you will easily see how truly large Pattaya is, and how small the areas that you mention.  There are plenty of interesting and enjoyable places at ground level to 'enjoy a good time and safe time'.

No, I know, It´s one of the most negative addictions I have. More evil and contains more poison than smoking cigarettes, that I actually managed to quit by the way. :cheesy:

Yes, there is a different world at the high end hotels. Most of the guests rarely venture out save for some organized shopping and a visit to places like the mecca of all things discounted, Mike Shopping Center. Unfortunately, these people who generate a large part of the  tourism revenue,  compromise a small portion of Pattaya's foreign visitor base and that is where the problems originate. There are far too many low end tourists, especially sex tourists and this will forever be a barrier, a massive obstacle to moving Pattaya upscale and cleaning up the dregs of humanity. Pattaya needs to change its demographic and go after more higher end  tourists. A good way to do it would to add a special tourism tax to price the low end customers out. Another 5-10%  on the tax could pay for the infrastructure needed to transform Pattaya.

And as a reminder, rooms at the better quality hotels  typically range from 6,000 baht to 10,000 baht per night. Add in the  dining and the excursions  and guests can easily spend 20,000 baht a night. If they go shopping,  it's anyone's guess as to what they can spend from 10,000 to 100,000 baht.  It is a very different world than that  occupied by the  guys living in 500 baht fan rooms and subsisting on 99baht meal specials etc. These low end customers are the source of many of Pattaya's problems and contribute nothing to the local economy except take up space and use  resources.

Ya get what ya pay for

Different strokes for different folks

I think that covers the waterfront

I've decided I'm looking at this in entirely the wrong way.  Instead of being offended by your wildly misinformed posts, I shall choose to be, instead, deeply flattered that you faithfully and devotedly seek to read and comment on each and every news story on lil 'ol Pattaya.  Can't think of any other city that would command such singular attention.  So, post away, good fellow, knowing that each post, no matter how negative, just burnishes Pattaya's mystique.

I like the place, warts and all!

You're welcome to it, Cheesy. For myself, I like to get down and dirty when I visit the Kingdom's Favourite Seaside Resort - always have.

What utter nonsence. Its the "low end" tourists as well as the long term ex pats that keep this place going. There are plenty of us here who are not sex tourists and bar stool hoggers. We enjoy living here to experience the good life, the nightlife and quality safe housing on the ourskirts of the town. If you introduce more and more over priced hotels and attract the lemmings from China then the place will slowely die a painful death.

And then you get down from the rooftop and it really starts to feel like BKK. Spent 45mins yesterday getting out of the Central car park. What a high life.

Mystique??? In the way you mean it in above comment that would mean exiting, interesting and a powerful force that draws you in to a magical experience.
So, today that means a lot of criminality, offering of sexual services and over drunk people in every corner. It also means the high risk of beeing robbed and beaten out in the street, and the availability of illegal drugs in too many places. After that all the polluted beaches and over exploration that has taken away the natural surroundings. Yep! That´s sounds like real magic and mystique too me. :cheesy:

apart from you being afraid of getting a good beating,

in what way does any of this rant affect You ?

pattaya has a grand total of 2 downsides:

1] because its a good place to live in, it unfortunately attract more people than fit physically, and the net result is traffic jam

2] corruption, but that is not pattaya specific,

the entire thailand is littered with corrupt officials
