Vatican arrests former diplomat after child pornography probe

Vatican arrests former diplomat after child pornography probe

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican said on Saturday its police had arrested a monsignor who worked as a diplomat at its embassy in Washington and is suspected of possessing child pornography in the United States and Canada.

A statement identified the accused as Msgr. Carlo Alberto Capella and said he was arrested earlier on Saturday in the Vatican after a warrant was issued by the Holy See's chief magistrate at the end of an investigation.

The Vatican statement said Capella, who was recalled from the Vatican embassy in Washington last August, was arrested according to articles of a 2013 law signed by Pope Francis. The articles cited by the statement related to child pornography.

If indicted, the monsignor will have to stand trial in the Vatican and faces up to 12 years in jail.

The scandal is the latest blow to the Catholic Church as it struggles to overcome repeated sex abuse cases among its clergy.

Francis has declared zero tolerance over abuse scandals that have beset the Church for decades, but critics say he has not done enough, particularly to hold bishops responsible for mishandling or covering up abuse.

The State Department notified the Holy See in August of a possible violation of laws relating to child pornography images by a member of the diplomatic corps of the Holy See accredited to Washington, the Vatican said in September.

A State Department spokesman said in September that the United States had requested that the man's diplomatic immunity be waived to open the way for possible prosecution there but the Vatican refused.

Capella entered the diplomatic corps in 2004 and before serving in Washington he held diplomatic posts in Hong Kong and Italy.

It was not possible to reach Capella, who the Vatican said was being held in a cell in the Vatican's police barracks.

After Capella was recalled to Rome, police in Windsor, Canada said they had issued an arrest warrant for him on suspicion of possessing and distributing child pornography on the internet.

A statement by Canadian police at the time said the suspected offences occurred while he was visiting "a place of worship" in Canada.

The recalling and arrest of Capella was the worst involving a diplomat since the case in 2013 of former Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, who was Polish.

Wesolowski faced charges of paying boys for sexual acts, downloading and buying paedophile material while he was the Vatican's ambassador in the Dominican Republic.

He was recalled to Rome by the Vatican, arrested, and stripped of his duties after a report by Dominican media led to an investigation by Dominican magistrates.

He died in hospital in 2015 at the age of 67 before his trial before a Vatican court could begin.

If it were just about any other organization on the planet, it would be closed down for good. The role of Pedophilia and sex abuse in the Catholic Church is truly one of the most disgusting and vile activities possible and there should be a price to pay. A realistic price, not some Vatican-sponsored BS.

I believe the question should now be; "What is the justification for keeping the Catholic Church open?"

PS If anyone wants to read about one of their truly horrifying stories, google 'mount Cashel orphanage in Newfoundland, Canada'. Disgusting beyond belief.

Years ago I listened to an interview on the CBC with a German journalist who’s beat was the Vatican.

He said the struggle within the Church isn’t  theological ( you don’t get to the Vatican if you disagree ), it’s sexuality.

The Church is run for and by pedos.

A medieval organisation that takes money from the poor and feeds them BS from a very young age ( substitute brainwashing )

How can anyone take seriously the idea of deciding what someone did 300/400 or whatever years ago was a miracle so today can make them a saint, ok, thought about it, they can make money from it.

Silly old men in frocks, funny hats and smoking hand-bags who prey on the poor, uneducated and little boys.

Are there any case studies as to why this particular institution, the Catholic church contains such a high population of pedophiles? Also, in all of the discussions I see on this topic, we never seem to ponder just why people would want to do such a horrible thing to children. Is it an addictive urge like the craving for nicotine that compels them to offend?. Is it an impulse they could control but really have no desire to do so? What is up? The willingness to express how much we hate these pedophiles far exceeds any attempts to investigate just what it is that makes these people tick.  Only when we get to the nature of the beast can we truly begin to solve this problem and really protect our children - early detection and identification of pedophilia????? I wish I had the answer. Do you think these people are happy with themselves?

Load of BS close it down before anymore kiddyfiddleing happens again, dirty scums

Don't think anyone can understand it.

Can't handle a partner with their own mind so go for kids who they feel they can control?

Sick to our minds anyway.

Don't disagree with you but the Roman Catholic Church, the church of Rome, pre-dates the medieval period. By the Middle Ages it was already well established, very rich and powerful and thoroughly corrupt and perverted.

Interestingly, we don't get many of the Catholic TVF posters joining this type of report thread and trying to defend their church.

It seems perversion and abuse have been institutionalized in that Church for centuries, with male clergy at all levels in the hierarchy and female nuns too.

"New research suggests that the employment of castrati was tolerated by the Vatican as late as 1959, long after other states had banned it as barbaric.

From the 16th century onwards generations of Italian boys were castrated in the hope that their voices, prevented from breaking, would combine a child's high register with the vocal power of a man.

Their ability to sing beyond normal human limits enraptured opera-goers, emperors and popes, who commissioned a choir of castrati to perform in the Sistine chapel. An edict by St Paul prevented women singing in church."

{The institution was ran by - lets say,  non Hugh Hefner types.}

And all they have to do is ask for forgiveness, say a few hail mary's etc, cross themselves a few times and voila - good to go again!

Probably by the middle ages things were getting well organised with better scamming and perv' systems.

Can always remember a joke from the 70's, I think.

What's the shortest length of time a pope has been in the chair.

Ans'  Hold that result!

Hope I am not drifting off topic , but I find it abhorrent that a fellow can get some qualifications that enable him to wear a black frock then gets to call little kids ' My son ' and expects them to call him father. Any wonder there is so much kiddie fiddling.

Murder included.

The Catholic church will never run out of pedophiles until it abolishes it's own man-made laws of banning female & married priests.

Unfortunately, being an organisation run by old men, fearful of females, it will probably take a sex-change pope to smash the bigotry. :-)

A very arguable point, you do make.

the Catholic Church was most definitely not a well established church, prior to the Middle Ages, and the fall of Rome, which led into the medieval period.

catholicism was “legalized” in the fourth century AD.... and became mainstream in the declining Roman Empire at the end of the fourth century.... with clovis’s (Frankish ruler after Rome’s collapse) conversion 100 years later, giving rise to an established church, moving on from 496AD

ergo, founded at the end of the Roman Empire, to grow into an enormous medieval apparatus of controlling the people’s of the dark ages, thru fear and punishment, declining at the end of the medieval period, during the Age of Enlightenment.... 500 - 1500 (all very roughly)

Wasn't there once a woman who ended up as pope by somehow hiding the fact and was only found out when she had a miscarriage in the street and was killed by the crowd?

Afterwards they had a special chair, where behind there was a viewing panel, and the new pope, before being confirmed had to sit not wearing underwear so the collection of dangly bits could be seen to confirm he was a he.

Celibacy  forces people to deny their nature, once someone denies their nature all short of unnatural things happen.

IMO good/straight people don't get to the higher echelons in the Catholic Church and then become pedophiles. They go into the church because they have pedophilic tendencies.

Of course they are happy! They are acting out their fetishes in safety, surrounded by like-thinking churchmen and knowing it's a safe haven.

Not just Catholics! Other religions have cupboards full of skeletons; all well documented.

Good....it was about time to clean up the rot in this patriarchal mafia model,  corrupt organisation....

This organisation is no better then the rot in extremist muslim, jewish or other religious confessions or groups....all tend to harm or exploit innocent people at one point......just, that it is done differently !

Only a couple of nights ago I watched on uk tv a documentary about pastors in South America.

One had a church built that was absolutely massive with about 5 screens showing reports of miracles. The place seated over a thousand people.

The interview with the pastor was funny, it was carried out over breakfast and when asked if he was rich his answer was

' no, I am just blessed by the Lord '

The screens were showing a clip of a woman who had donated money to the pastor and lo and behold when a couple of weeks later she had a blood check her HIV infection had been cured. Praise the Lord. People were running to throw money at the pastor and be blessed. Initially I laughed and then thought I wonder how much of that tax free cash ends up in the Vatican.

You must have heard about the priest minister and rabbi and how they divide the weekly donations.

Minister says the lord guides my hand and I take one coin at a time from the bag, one for him one for me.

Priest says I do a 50/50 split.

Rabbi says I throw it all in the air, what the lord wants he keeps, what comes down is mine.

I know, the old ones are the best ones.  ??

If they are not happy with themselves let them commit suicide, saves a lot of people a lot of pain.

Won't argue and feel that all the attention and help should be given to the kids first.

first time I heard about this, thank you, even though it has put me off my appetite for today.
It had been going on for decades,
and 15 years of Police (and Ministerial) cover up until seriously opening the investigations...
Millions of dollars of compensations paid;
with the money believers contributed to the church no doubt,
So much for the understanding that contributions go to good causes..
I SAY !
