Ambulance story takes new twists as patent dies and defamation accusations fly

The story of the  red Suzuki Swift that would not get out of the way of an ambulance is becoming the drama of the month.

It hit the news last week after a Facebook post from the emergency staff in the ambulance on a personal page complained about the red car.

The story seemed cut and dried with action expected to be taken by police against the driver of the Suzuki for not getting out of the way.

The story got serious when it was announced that the patient in the ambulance that had its siren blaring had since died.

Now it emerges that the passenger in the Suzuki is a emergency response staff member and the driver could also be an ER worker.

Dr Sanchai Chasombat, a spokesperson for emergency teams said that the person or persons concerned have not come to work.

He also had a question for admin of fan page Street Hero Project who interviewed him:

He asked why the driver of the ambulance did not cut in on the left as the road was free?

Dr Sanchai said that the post on Facebook had damaged reputations and should not have happened.

He suggested that a case might be made to sue the original poster for defamation. He added that more investigations were needed to get to the truth of the matter.

In reporting the story Thai Rath gave no further information about the deceased person who seems to have become secondary to the drama  of who was exactly who that is playing out on Thai social media.

Why sue the Facebook, the RTP should be rounding up the Suzuki  driver and his arm out the window mate locking them up and throwing the key away. Then the family of the deceased could sue them for negilence

Don't think we can blame the passenger, but the driver.

Lock him up for a few weeks and heavy fine 50,000 should do it.

a fair enough question, highlights the 'me first, me now,me only' attitude of thai drivers

Eventually, the ambulance did pass on the inside but probably thought the Suzuki would move out of the way first, hence the delay in making the manoeuvre.

T H A I N E S S , face saving FAR MORE IMPORTANT  Than actually saving a patient , as well as any  PERTSON WHO FAILS TO MOVE OUT OF THE WAY SHOULD BE FINED HEAVILY .

I have said it before Thai Culture kills people more than WE REALISE !

Face-ty first....

The selfish attitude of drivers here never ceases to amaze me, leave a safe braking gap between you and the car in front, and some knob will cut into it, usually without signalling. Travel at a safe speed and another knob will tailgate you. Start crossing a junction on a green light and a knob will jump the opposite red.

With ambulances, don’t people realize it could be them or a family member being treated in the back?

I notice police vehicles (and many other categories, even passenger vans and tow trucks) constantly use red roof lights, but rarely, much less than Western countries, use sirens unless escorting VIPs. This means to me that actually intervening in an incident whilst it is happening is much less important than arranging how to profit afterwards from the outcome.

If the road was so clearly "free," why didn't the car driver simply move aside?

Emergency vehicles have the right of way.

Unbelievable! Works in Emergency services, but has that much disrespect for the whole thing when not actually at work?

Hasn't turned up for work? Good. Sack them on the spot and make sure they never get to work in a hospital again and take their license to drive away for a very long time.
Morons on the road delaying emergency services cost lives. One in this case already it seems.

Oh! And Dr. Sanchai wanting to go after the poster of the incident should be sacked also. The incident needed to be seen to reveal awful behaviour and bugger the reputation. Lives are more important.

no no   must never reveal what is happening !

I watched a bit of this on Thai TV this evening and because the ambulance driver posted the video on the social media. HE has been suspended from working for 15 days by the ambulance company. This is what my Thai neighbour tells me.

The people who employed the driver of the red Suzuki are suing because they lost "Face".

Am I getting this right? Sanchai Chasombat, a spokesperson for emergency teams, asked the admin of the web page Street Hero Project why the driver of the ambulance did not cut in on the left as the road was free. Why does he expect the admin of the web page to be able to answer this question?

Was the ambulance driver acting correctly when he published the video on the Internet? I don't think so. If anything, he should have given it to his immediate superior and let him decide what to do with it. Probably, it would have gone no further from there but that would not have been the driver's problem.

Yes I believe that the ambulance driver did the correct thing.

By doing that he has stirred up a hornets nest, and so many people have commented on the social media that it cannot be swept under the carpet.

If he had given it to his supervisor, as you say, probably nothing would be done.

The way he did it exposed the stupidity of the red Suziki driver and hopefully more Thai drivers will become aware and move over.

The more videos shown on the social media like this will hopefully chip away at the stupidity of so many Thai "drivers".

Saying that, I hope that if I had been driving the ambulance I would have nudged and shoved the stupid Suxiki driver out of the way.

I wonder how many drivers would do an emergency pullover or lane change in order to let a ambulance which did not have its lights flashing and did not have siren turn-on (i.e. not indicating it is in emergency mode)?

Does anyone know of a law in any country requiring yielding the right-of-way to an ambulance that is not indicating an emergency?
