I am trying to buy a new monitor in the range of 21.5 to 23 inch.

Can anyone recommend a brand in terms of clarity of picture, colors, and durability (not much problem after many years)

I've compared Philips and Samsung monitor and it seems that Philips has brighter colors than Samsung. But I am not sure how durable Philips is.

I would not start with comparing brands, but decide on the type of LCD panel.

I decided for an IPS panel display (25" from Acer).

Not the cheapest.

The majority of LCDs seem to be TN panel types for "gamers" (where speed is the #1 feature).

And of course you have to decide about resolution and ratio.

For me  "only" Full HD (1920*1080, 16:9) is still good enough.

All depends on your use.

ACER LED 25" R251bid (IPS Panel)

That's the one I have. About 7000 6000 Baht now.

Very satisfied.

It was also important for me to have a DVI connector (to the graphics card).

Some data:

Display Size Detail: 25"
Panel Type: IPS In-Plane Switching
Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Refresh Rate: 60Hz
Response Time: 4 ms
Brightness: 250cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 100,000,000:1

I think play video games so the ones with the clearest for text reading and watching youtube should be IPS?

Is Acer or samsung better because both are IPS.

Clearly better than the TN panels ("gaming monitor").

There seem to be more advanced technologies than IPS nowadays.

But they will probably have a high price range.

One brand that often stands out in tests is EIZO, a monitor specialist.

But rarely seen in Thailand.

Acer vs. Samsung:

all I can tell is, that I have seen some reviews where Samsung did show poor results.

Acer seems to come out better.

Have you decided on price range and resolution (Full HD or more)?

As I understand you don't want bigger than 23 inch.

Full HD is sufficient (no need to go higher than this).

Price range is below 5000 baht.

I came across a computer shop showing Philips alongside the other brands and the show unit beat all the other rivals in terms of brightness and colors (it was 23 inch).

But I am afraid of the reliability of the product, there's no point buying something that won't last more than 1 year even though it's good.

I will strike out Samsung from the list, so it's between Acer and Philips now.

If the PC/device has a compatible connector, yes.

Most likely both will have a HDMI connector.

Whether you will like depends on resolution (pixels) vs. viewing distance.

Many older TVs (standard "HD") only have 1366x768 and start at 32 inch size.

From a short viewing distance you might not be happy with that.

Would you want to buy a new one or have an existing one?

That's overly pessimistic.

My previous thing was a Samsung universal monitor (4:3!) with loudspeakers, TV tuner etc. It lasted about 10 years.

I sit about 18 inches from the screen and IIRC I can get a bigger TV screen than a monitor screen for. the same price.

I don't have an existing screen that is not in use but I have a 20 inch Samsung monitor on a laptop with no screen and a 25 inch Acer monitor on my desktop.

Even though I wear glasses I have upped the display to 125% and this morning I tried 150% which was easier to read.

I am editing my Ebook library and I am having a problem reading the titles at 125%. 150% is OK but I have to keep crossing back and forth to read stuff.

There are pros and cons

Radiation level that is harmful to eyes, the bigger the screen the more the radiation.

Power consumption

Price

All the above are higher in TV than monitor. Correct me if I am wrong...

If you use a monitor for many hours everyday, it's more economical to use a monitor rather than a TV.

Good advice.

Thank you.

I have bought a Philips dvd player many  years ago and  it didn't last more than one year.

So I've decided to buy an Acer because the members here seem to be fine with it.

The problem with most Thai specs is that they don't list whether the monitor is TN, IPS or whatever. Those Thai salespeople I've asked don't know what is TN, VA or IPS too.

I am trying to find an Acer IPS 21.5 inch model but they all look similar in model numbering. If there are no IPS for 21.5 inch then I will look for 23.5 inch model.

There is.

https://www.lazada.co.th/products/acer-led-ips-215-k222hqlbbid-black-dvihdmivga-i160573256-s193379130.html

JIB and others also list it.

" ACER 21.5" K222HQLBBID "

What a complicated designation.

If you a contrast ratio of "100 million: 1" and response time 4 ms you can be quite certain it is an IPS panel.

Unfortunately sounds familiar.

You have to get informed beforehand.

Another reason why I often resort to online order.

And if they are not even able to show you a spec. sheet or the like: next shop.

I am thinking of getting the R231 BID which is a smaller screen version ie. 23 inch than what you have. It's still below 5000 baht

I find the text and color on the 21 inch K222 poor, how's the color representation and sharpness of text on your R251 BID model?

Sharp as a knife, brightness on 30% otherwise I would be blinded.

Where did you watch the 21 inch model?

What content was running/shown?

Properly connected (not VGA)?

Every monitor looks bad if the source is not suitable.

For proper comparison you need appropriate source, monitor settings and at the end test images.

Difficult in a shop.

Proper setting, a typical test image for brightness/contrast.

https://www.photofriday.com/info/calibrate

Can you distinguish all grey scales A to Z?

Can you see the rings A/B/C and X/Y/Z?

Can you see the embedded rectangles B and Y?

I can.

I tested at IT city in Central Festival, the salesman was kind enough to let me hook my laptop to the monitor.

I tested on Excel sheet, music video etc. The colors were dull. I used the factory default setting though cause the salesman was not very patient so I had to test fast.

But this is the K222 model and not the same as yours which is a higher-end model.

The only difference between R231 and R251 is the screen size but the quality remains the same.
