BANGKOK, 13th April 2018 (NNT) – The Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, has urged relevant units to focus more on concrete road accident prevention measures than just reporting the figures.

The Government Spokesman, Lt. Gen. Sansern Kaewkamnerd, said Gen. Prayut has expressed his concerned for the general public during the Songkran holidays after receiving a report about the high traffic volume on some main highways, particularly in the northern and northeastern regions, during the Songkran holiday.

He said the Prime Minister has instructed military personnel, policemen, and government officials to implement plans to ensure public safety and facilitate travelers, rather than just reporting on accident statistics.

He called on road users and the general public to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol, wear safety helmets, drive under the speed limit, fasten seatbelts, and strictly obey traffic regulations and cooperate with officials.

Government agencies have set up some 2,000 checkpoints and service points across Thailand, and enforced a regulation limiting the speed of passenger vans to be no more than 90 kilometers per hour, limiting the working hours of drivers, tracking public vehicles using GPS, ensuring all public vehicles in service are in good conditions, and asking for transport operators not to operate double-decker buses.

The Prime Minister has also ordered officials to strictly patrol bus stations, railway stations, airports, and ports to prevent thieves and unreasonable raising of ticket prices, as well as providing assistance to travelers.

appealing to thai sentiments respecting law and order, regard for others and safety is pointless; the negatives of those are entrenched in today's thai society

So he is acknowledging that so far that is all that has been done by the police.

Does he really think he will change anything by just saying a few words? Of course he won't. He hasn't done anything about reforming the police, even though he said he would in the past.

It was possible to say all that in one sentence.

Be careful everyone, don't break the laws, everybody do your job properly.

But in this kindergarten state, everything must be spelt out twice, and everyone must be spoonfed.

Of course it was, but anyone in the public eye won't just turn up and utter one sentence, will they.

They all want the oh-so-important photo-opportunity to (try to) promote themselves, irrelevant of whether what is said is meaningful.

We should all be thankful he hasn't written a lamenting ballad about Thailand's infamous road death toll which has international recognition. The buck stops with the man in charge! All he is doing is running from responsibility and blaming others; as per normal.

Proven lip service saves lives only 39 dead on day one.

The Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, has urged relevant units to focus more on concrete road accident prevention measures than just reporting   "Fudging" the figures.

So the Thai PM thinks the majority of the accidents occur on concrete roads?

If he asked for all of this in one of his trademark monolithic sentences, the average road user will have forgotten most of it before the finish.

Reform? What does that mean? Do Thai authorities understand the process and possible benefits to the country? NAH!

Also, very very difficult to 'reform' an organisation when you are dependent upon it to support your 'powerful position'!!

When leaders need to beg the citizens to behave, does anyone notice?

Songkran is a showcase for road carnage but is not that far above the norm. Hey I got an idea: what if the RTP became involved in law enforcement? What a concept huh!

Two men in charge actually. What about the Minister of Transport who is conspicuous by his absence.

It would be a little more reassuring to occasionally to hear from this person (or maybe he's just a phantom) to hear exactly what they are doing.

I love your coinage of 'kindergarten state'. That is just what I've been searching for (the term, I mean) for years! It sums Thailand up perfectly. I often speak of the 'infantilism' of Thai 'culture' - but your phrase of a 'kindergarten state' is better. Do you mind if I use it from time to time - ha ha?!

.
concrete road accident prevention .

There's the problem, too much concrete !
they could use up all the rubber in the world (Thailand) and have nice soft bouncy roads which could dramatically cut down the death toll and keep the rubber farmers happy.

Also they should experiment with a Thai innovation to use up the rice stock pile
"Ricecrete 4.0" lighter,cheaper,sustainable concrete.

I can see the meeting about it now.

Endless talk about throwing ideas around to see how they bounce, then voting for the one that sticks.

I like the comment on "all the rubber in the world (Thailand)."

Blablabla,  empty head, empty words. Same procedure every year. However no change at all.

If PM would be seriously doing his job he would enforce law..... But not limited over Songkran .

Here’s an idea Junta leader

get the people that they employed to do their job, actually get their salary for doing their job, get off their lazy <deleted> (which includes watch man and many others) start firing them without no pension no inactive post and seize their assets ( through ill gotten gains)

i can dream

When will people say he’s not a PM he’s a Junta leader from the Coup????!!!!!! The Thai people did not through vote elect him

If he becomes PM (which seems likely as positioned people where he wants ) then feel  so sorry for Thailand - he’s an Arse and his Defense “minister” even more so
