Hi. I was divorced in Australia in November. I am thinking about marrying my long term Thai girlfriend but she says I need to wait a year after my divorce in Australia to remarry again in Thailand. Is this true? I am considering going to Savannaket and applying for a visa based on marriage.

The is no one year requirement after getting divorced to register your marriage at an Amphoe.
After registering you marriage you could get a single or multiple entry non-o visa based upon marriage to a Thai.

Doesn't the one year rule apply to Thai women only. That is my understanding.

It is something like 240 days for women. But that can be overcome with a pregnancy test or proof they cannot get pregnant.

Divorced December 3, married on May 21, the following year.

That's for the official marriage registration. MIL still bickering that I refused to perform the clown act of a village marriage.

Very foolish, not going through the village ceremony.

The village ceremony is very important to Thai families.

Your wife might not have said anything, but she will not be happy with you regarding that.

Yeah you, you are right, they'll resent missing out on an opportunity to get free food and drink.

And for the anecdote, a few years back I came across an article about some European pedophile, aged 70 plus, the photo backing the article was one of his "village" marriage, him in fancy dress with his 15 years old bride... Ooak...

And my missus is smart enough to enjoy the real benefits of our relationship: love, sex, her brand new degree, bilingual kids, health insurance, etc., etc..

You just dont get it..... FACE.....

To Thai people face is the most important thing.

Your M.I.L. Has lost big face because of you, and your wifes family will never allow her to forget that.

You seriously think, your wife will put you before her family?

It’s a good job us expats don’t suffer the deadly face disease

M.I.L has 3 daughters the only one that has a lawful caring husband is my wife. The youngest has a child from some deceased  Russian creep, and the last one is having a good life in Korea, so..

And yes as @Dispstick pointed out we are Farang, and we have nothing to gain from aping the Thais.

Well when I received my Divorce Absolute papers ..two day later flew out here and two days later legally married ...

The next day got Mrs J's visa to come to UK for I think it was called settlement ...

Was fifteen years ago now and things were much easier...but it did take a little planning and several taxi rides. Had done the family marriage thing some three months earlier ...

We celebrate the family wedding date ... can't even remember the amphur date ....
