PHUKET:-- Phuket City Municipality led a joint effort to clear another canal in Phuket Town of undergrowth and debris today (April 23) ahead of the annual monsoon rains returning next month.

Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong led the official ceremony at 9am, held by the banks of the Ta Kraeng Canal alongside the Baan Talad Nua School, which is located opposite Suan Luang on Chao Fa Rd on the south side of Phuket Town.

Has anyone actually ever seen a beautiful canal with clear water anywhere in Thailand?

Much as the work is admirable it's a given that the khlong won't stay that way for long.

Last week I was enjoying a beer in the sun outside a canal-side pub in England. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to do this here, without having to endure that unmistakeable stench.

Perhaps a few weeks late, but at least they seem to be making the effort.

Let's see.

A dozen laborers, probably Burmese, paid 200 baht to get into the canal for some photos.  Then, the announcement of a canal clean up by authorities.

Job done.  :cheesy:

Where is the backhoe, and the dump trucks?

Just more propaganda from authorities here, without really addressing the situation and doing what needs to be done.

"Official Ceremony' to do what should be a routine maintenance job- classic photo op!
