They’re hardly serious criminals if they have to grind the hours away teaching English for downwards of 30k to cover their criminal activities. The recent “Outlaw Foreigners X-Ray” is  just going for low hanging fruit that don’t have any Puyai protection whilst at the same time making great photo and speech opportunities for the all important and lavish opening and closing ceremonies.

or maybe they are just getting rid of the scum

Nothing odd... common practice. But I would like to see the names of said international schools. Been here teaching 15 years and if they actually did a serious clean up of foreigners teaching on touri

I Quite honestly, I can't see any normal school letting illegal, non-native speakers anywhere near the kids.

So illegal natives are ok? Or do you think  that NES math or music  teachers are better than NNES?

Did I say that?

What gets me is the defence of those who are illegally in the country, visa expired, no entry stamp and/or working illegally by some who will defend the expulsion of similar in their home country.

Why do they see Thailand as different?

Illegal is illegal.

Education in Thailand is not about education; it is about money and that partially explains why it is in the mess that it is.

With the below-par remuneration, questionable legality, insecurity and generally poor terms and conditions of most employment as a foreign teacher in Thailand, what exactly is the attraction?

You got there before me?

International schools my arse.

Any international school worth its salt would never employ an unqualified person on a tourist visa. All international schools are externally accredited - Cfbt, BSO, etc and part of that very through and detailed accreditation process is a detailed examination of all parts of the schools inner workings.

I am sure this must be a poor translation as they are talking about language schools that have the word 'international' in their business name.

I don't know. I believe Vietnam has far better wages and working conditions for teachers than Thailand. Thailand is not the be-all and end-all or the only place to get a teaching job in S.E.Asia.

Looking outside the box, these ongoing raids show how inactive and inefficient Thai immigration is. They only excel in time wasting TM 30 reports and fines.

If you do no wrong, you need not fear a knock on your door at midnight.

They'll only start feeling that way when the locals start rounding up white peoples with such fervor. Until then it'll all be "Gud job boys!", "Hang um high!"

I'm not convinced about either point; illegal employment nor non-native speakers.

Further, many schools / all types of schools do employ people illegally, so why aren't the school owners / directors not prosecuted for breaking the law?

What about the boiler rooms? Seems like no one ever bothers them. Too much black money being spread around.

That must be one of the most historically insightless and incorrect observations ever made on ThaiVisa.

Other: The other suspects charged with other crimes is what is worrisome.  Anyone could be found guilty of other as it is not defined.  It is what they decide at the time.

Well Done! We never want Thailand's squeaky clean reputation overseas to be tarnished by this Filthy Farang Trash doing all those corrupt activities never to be sanctioned or tolerated by Thailand.

BANGKOK — An ongoing crackdown on illegal immigrants saw the arrest of almost a hundred foreigners early Thursday morning in the capital.

Police officers arrested 99 foreign nationals at about 2am on Thursday – the ninth crackdown of ongoing operation “X-Ray Outlaw Foreigner” – before holding a press conference at Montien Hotel on Surawong Road.

Especially when they target schools to find call centre, romance scam and ATM/CC criminals.  That hardly seems correct.  Very odd indeed.

Seems to me the schools ought to be shut down for hiring illegal/unqualified teachers. Don't the schools have the responsibility to hire legally resident, qualified teachers and get them the proper work permits? If not, why not? Certainly seems the employer ought to be responsible for ensuring the employee is here legally. The teachers should be investigated and given a small fine for not reporting the school for its illegal practices. If the investigation of the teachers results in other charges; handle them accordingly. Oh, silly me, there I go again expecting rational action.

they seem too. a lot of africans working as english teachers in the sticks. really dodgy but i guess they only have to pay them 25k and that's pretty much impossible to live on so they must be up to something else

It seems that all these "Quasi" international school require is for the so called "Teacher" to be of white face and can read and utter some english.

After X-Ray, when MRI scanning will start ?

While they 'round up' and corral the odd jetsam and flotsam of Thailand's undesirables, hundreds others coming in on a daily basis using all points

"Usefully"? Where are we gonna go.

Surachet said the tourist police joined hands with other police agencies to search three international schools, nine language schools, 60 normal schools and 46 other areas.

However, I do not like illegal things, but here I have to remind you, that the Thai work permit is simply a nonsense. It is valid only to a certain place a and a certain occupation. If I teach in a school and have private students, that is not covered by the work permit. Even if it is in the same town or street.  In most of the cases working in a summer camp is illegal. No school can manage the teachers work permit for short a period like this.

I am not speaking about the big, international schools, but my school has been managing my and my colleagues' visa since last October and they really work on the case. Whose fault is this? Definitely, teachers cannot blame for it.

My guess is that its mainly stupid or desperate foreign criminals who overstay their visas or enter Thailand illegally to commit crime. I'd bet that most foreign criminals do visa runs and then come back to continue their illegal activities like selling drugs on the sides of the street. And they know that when the police check their passports, their visa stamps look fine. The police should be targeting these people. Having a valid entry stamp shouldn't allow foreigners to commit crime and get away with it.

were they all English ?

About bloody time, good riddance .
