Problems with your internet connection in Thailand? You could be due a refund

If you have problems with your internet connection in Thailand and the service is regularly disrupted, you could be entitled to a refund.

This week Thailand’s telecoms regulator the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) warned internet service providers that they must give discounts or refunds to customers whenever their service is disrupted.

Failure to do so could result in the internet service provider being fined or even having their license suspended, Takorn Tantasith, NBTC secretary-general warned.

According to Thai law, customers should be refunded whenever the internet service goes down due to it being the fault of the internet service provider.

Refunds or discounts should be reimbursed to customers the following month and displayed on their bill.

How about time wasted calling to their call center, the wait times and explaining to the operators?

And they'll spend so much time coming up with reasons it wasn't their fault that you'll never see a dime.  Especially since you probably can't prove it, especially after the fact-- if their server goes down or they cut a wire or something, how will you ever know what the cause was?  Not to mention I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of clause for "acts of God" and it's going to be blamed on the weather or someone hitting a pole every time.

Even back in the U.S. once I had a problem with connecting to newly-set-up internet... someone from the provider came out... problem was fixed before he even set foot in my apartment, because of a faulty switch at the main box in the building.  They tried to charge me for the visit anyway as if it was my fault (the rule there is usually "if we come out and it's a problem with our equipment, you don't pay.  If it's a problem with your equipment, you do."  It certainly wasn't anything in my hardware, software, actions, or knowledge and they tried to make me pay anyway).  Imagine that sort of thing times 100 here.

Farm machine has torn down "my" line.

Delivery pickup brought down a pillar with power and data lines.

....

And that was the truth (for two of my cases)

Most would probably agree with you and so would I have except last month I did actually get a reduction. I rang True to ask why the internet was off and was told due to some remedial works blah blah. I complained out for whole day or something and was told sorry we will give you a reduction on your bill. I thought to myself yeah and pigs may fly........

Same or next day I received a text saying my bill had been adjusted by 22.89 baht "due to internet disruption". So it is possible........

I had to rang True for more than 10 times, after 3 months of following up only they gave me discount for 1 week of service disruption. For that 200baht, I had to waste time and phone calls to get that 200b discount. Looking at how people work here, I guess most of people wouldn't want to waste time asking for refund. We never used any True service since that but I don't expect better service from others.
