International driver's license in CM: what's the deal?

Featured Replies

Would like to get one and can offer my 5 year Thai driver's license.  Is that enough, where do i need to go, what's the cost, how long does it take, must i take a test of any kind...etc?

any info welcome

I thought a 5 year Thai license was an international one. Pretty sure I've rented cars abroad using one.

Without being pedantic it's an International Driving Permit. It acts as an interpreter to show foreign countries that you hold certain types of licences in your 'home' country.

It is acknowledged in certain countries but not all.  Some countries will accept it for a certain length of time and upto a year. After which you may have to sit some exams/tests to get 'their' countries licence (s).

I am led to believe the DLT in Hang Dong can provide a IDP for a fee. Bear in mind you will only get an IDP for those licences you current hold in Thailand.

You also have to have the Thai licence on you if you wish to use the IDP overseas.

Renting a car with a certain license has nothing to do with the licensing requirements of a country.

Like renting a motorbike here they ask for nothing.  Get stopped by the cops you can be screwed.

You can get it at the Transport Dept, if you already have a Thai drivers license.

I would actually try an agency probably not too expensive to get one less hassle.

This thread would really be better in the motor forum.

Yes you can get an international driving permit based on your Thai 5yr license (not possible on 2yr temporary).

Where to go? Guess!

Of course to the nearest DLT office.

There is surely no test to take.

But what I don't know is, whether you need any other documents then passport and Thai DL. Likely that's enough.

You will get an international driving permit based on the 1949 Geneva convention.

Unfortunately there is another 1968 version.

Some countries might be picky about the correct version.

Where (which country) do you want to drive?

Some offices can issue it on site same day.

Others seem to send the application to Bangkok and might take a week or so.

Cost? Would have to look up. Likely in the xxx Baht range.

Care to expand?

I know in NZ you will not be able to rent any vehicle unless you have the relevant licence.  An equivalent foreign licence with an IDP is generally accepted by the rental company and Police.

Thailand is completely different in that regard.

From an older thread (there are many ).

That's a sample:
