It's a lovely city, unspoiled by throngs of tourist, except for holiday weekends when zillions of Chinese invade the town. Waterfalls abound nearby, good small restaurants in the town center, reasonably priced accommodations. Many tour companies to offer you things to do.... Definitely a great place to visit.

Thanks for the info, how long would you suggest is long enough, 4-5 days.

If you are interested in old/ancient history, not far from Luang Prabang is the "Plain of Jars" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plain_of_Jars).

It would almost be a "must see" if you are that close.

Luang Prabang was also the home of the Emerald Buddha for a few years (1552-1564), having been taken there from it's previous home in Chiang Mai (and then moved to Vientiane in 1564 where it stayed for the next 214 years). Not sure where it was housed while in Luang Prabang but there will probably be references to it around the city.

Note that "Luang Prabang" literally means "Royal Buddha Image" but in this case, refers to the Phra Bang, an image of Buddha that a Khmer king gave his son-in-law (Fa Ngum) back in 1359 to grant "Buddhist legitimacy" to his rule over that area.

The Phra Bang is considered to be the most sacred Buddhist image in Laos and many devout Buddhists see it a symbol of the right to rule Laos.

There is also the Royal Palace Museum that may be worth a look if you're into that kind of thing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Palace,_Luang_Prabang) .

ps: "Lat Krabang" is the district immediately north of the Suvarnabhumi Airport. :jap:
