Is "Farang" Derogatory?

I justt say 'Pom mai dai pen farang, chu Kuhn John’.  

On the other hand, I have always been confused why foreigners always say ’This is my Thai Wife’   If they were in their home country would they say ‘this is my Brit wife, or German wife??  No, they would just say ‘This is my wife’……….why do they always feel the need to announce they have a Thai wife??
