World-leading technology to catch NSW drivers illegally using their mobile phones is part of a new road safety crackdown.

The reforms, which passed state parliament yesterday, extend powers to authorities for roadside oral testing of cocaine, increase penalties for driving under the influence and introduce red-light-style cameras capable of detecting mobile phones used by drivers.

Roads Minister Melinda Pavey said NSW was the first state in Australia to introduce the legislation which would come into effect from July 1.

Ms Pavey said from 2012 to 2017 there were 184 crashes which involved illegal mobile phone use, resulting in seven deaths and 105 injuries

NSW is a little behind... Down over the border, since back in 2014, the VICs quietly tested and implemented theirs!

 -  a camera, car mounted, that can detect face/body gestures, i.e the downward look of someone txting etc

      - and can detect this from up to 700 metres away!!

still, you don't always need a camrra...

at night time, dumb txters don't realise that the glowing face of their mobile being swipe touched, is easily multi-reflected outside via their vehicle windows... for all to see

Does NSW have timed speed cameras on the highways , as Victoria does

What do you mean by "timed speed cameras"? They do have so-called "safety cams" or "average speed cameras", which detect the amount of time taken between two points and can issue a citation if it takes less time to cover the distance between the cameras than if you're driving at the speed limit. For example, you could be doing 105km/h at both of the checkpoints but up to 140km/h in between, resulting in an average speed of say 122km/h, in which case you would get a ticket.

All of this stuff is quite creepy and Orwellian though. Hope it never makes it to Thailand but I suspect within the next 10-15 years it could very well. Already speed cameras in Thailand have increased quite considerably on some major roads (though equally, some have been removed which is surprising) in the past 2 years. Speed limit signs are also posted regularly where none were posted until 2016.

Yes the same as Victoria ..they say it saves life's, i am sure they do if you are doing over the speed limit by 10 +kl ms. To have a 3 klm over the limit and get a ticket is just revenue raising
