(Reuters) - The Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii's Big Island came to life on Thursday, belching ash into the sky and spewing lava into a residential area where people were ordered to leave their homes, officials said.

The eruption occurred after a series of earthquakes on the island over the last couple of days, including a 5.0 tremor at about 10:30 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey reported on its website.

Residents in the Puna community, home to about 10,000 people, were ordered to evacuate after public works officials reported steam and lava emissions from a crack, according to media and the county's website.

Resident Ikaika Marzo told Hawaii News Now that he saw "fountains" of lava.

A plume of red ash rose from the volcano's Pu'u 'O'o vent high into the sky over the island, according to photos on social media.

The Kilauea Volcano has been erupting nearly continuously for more than three decades. Lava flows from the volcano, one of five on the island, have buried 48 square miles (125 km), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The leading edge of the lava can reach temperatures of about 2,100 Fahrenheit (1,149 Celsius).

The big island is a magical place of sorts. The locals seem to recover pretty quickly from these things.

I wonder what happens if the lava were to reach a gas station or other large fuel storage area.

And to just two days ago YELLOWSTONE volcano’s Steamboat Geyser blasted its first triple eruption in 15 years and there were also three earthquakes under the ocean in California

Coincidence? Or is something more serious happening deep down in the earth?

It is. I had the pleasure in the early 90s to watch the lava flow into the sea with spectacular steam bursts.

And that was only one of many highlights on Big Island.

As far as I remember the direction/extension of flow is quite predictable and of course no such things allowed in the area.

Still people will not stop building houses in the endangered areas.

My cousin has lived in Puna Hawaii just east of the rift for over 40 years and yes she is aware of mother nature. She sent me these photos this morning.

It couldn't be anywhere near as impressive as the current eruption :passifier:

Wrong Washington

Seems like this time it's exceptionally strong.

Just read about a 6.9 earthquake.
