Maybe that has something to do with the availability of sleeping pills here in Thailand. Its quite hard to kill yourself with for instance xanax. So using logic one first has to check if the same medicine are available and of course your not going to find much people jumping from flats in a country town without flats while flats are far more common in Thailand.

Perhaps a few of these tried with pills but woke up and said "Damn! !!!

If they still intended to do it they would not be telling anyone about the pill failure before resorting to the gravity method.  Understanding the situation many expats have got themselves into here and "out of" back home, the incidence of suicide here does not surprise me.  I think some are pushed but many are genuine suicide jumpers unfortunately.

I always suspect very few of the 'jumpers' actually jumped.

More like fell or were pushed.

But suicide is a popular and convenient explanation for all concerned, police don't need to investigate, insurance doesn't need to pay, holidaymakers aren't discouraged from visiting. 'Jumping' is a win win conclusion for all involved (except the victim, and who really cares about an old foreigner).

You are wrong about the insurance  (if a person had any) not paying  when the person commits suicide. Many insurance companies  will pay if the policy has been in effect for a number of years, usually a minimum of 2 years.

Car accidents sometimes are not intentional l guess.  Jumping is and this guy even hit a car before the ground.  I have worked ambulance duty many years ago.

Try and get your head around the fact that suicides aren't thinking rationally. They are not considering who cleans up, otherwise people wouldn't blow their heads off with shotguns.

I finished my last contract in Thailand on the 31st December at which time I was 71. Now at 72 I still have my work permit and have been getting many offers of work as a Consultant both in Thailand and overseas. It helps of course that I (my wife) runs a limited company that employs me to provide Contract Management Services to others.

The question is..... Is it usual that 71 year old expats have jobs....? The answer is : NO !

There is no country in the world where so many people fall from balconies. It always surprises me that these cases are closed by suicide, depression or alcoholism. Tell me why does this deathrate caused by falling from balconies  happen at such a high rate only in Thailand?

Are the fences to low? Yes and no. I simply can not believe that it is always self inflicted.

Only imagine. You don't have friends, sex without blue pills doesn't exist, nor does free sex, perhaps some illnesses and no insurance, money issues, and many bills to pay.

   What's left in your life?

But they've installed telephones for those who think twice.

If you think twice you're not serious. Besides, can't put a telephone help line wherever a potential suicide happens to be.

A very pessimistic view, I take a far more optimistic line,

While you have a pension, you can always have a family happy to share it with you.

I said in another post, suicide very selvdom comes as an impulsive act. Most have thought trough it for a long time, and decided how and where and even when.

Not very pessimistic, when I realize it is up to me now, and not later ;-) I can use mye knownledge and prepare myself for my future, even I can not predict the future, I can make sure I am doing the right thing to do. Im very optimistic, since I am capable to do so.

It used to be a criminal offense to attempt suicide. Obviously they couldn't prosecute those who succeeded.

I can agree it is maybe some few who get pushed, but really, think about it? You old, little money, your little thing doesnt give you joy anymore, going to the bar you realize your friends is only speaking about they daily problems, world problems, finding new hate objects, and this have been going on for years in a loop. People start dying around you, and life is miserable, and you start thinking about what you should have done 20 years ago first time you sat your as on that bar chair. Just an example! Could have been 5 years ago for what I care.

I know when I get older, lonely, used abused no money, no hope, no family I will also end it myselves. But as far as I am concerned, I can start avoiding that now while I can.

i think that you are wrong, people live in pain because they can not afford  an op, i personately wrote to every one before two new hips, stating that if the pain did not go  i was out of here, luckily i had the money and a great result, at 71 who cares, better to end it, golf hcp back to 5 so will be happily taking the pommie bastards money for a while yet !

Thats why I say, I have to start thinking now, get my health care going, saving my money, not use them on beer, ladies, and everything else that can ruin me. Including wasting money on bitcoins, marriage, putting land in others name and trust people to much with all of your savings. We have choices, god sake we come from wealthy countries, and cant you live a wealthy life here, and leave your health care in Europe, or any other country for living in paradise, and think you are going to be 40 year rest of your life?

Im sorry for those who have nothing, but most of those who came here, they had a choice long time ago, and they walked the walk knowing the risk they took.

Disclaimer: I am not talking about those who where mental ill, or any other struggle in life. They are excepted/excluded from my conclusions. But, there is a but, because I have met people who had everything, and left everything because they got the Thai fever in their blood.

Suicide ends one problem, starts another....

Please tell what the started problem is for the deceased person.

I'd naturally hope  a person with obligations to others would insure those persons would be taken care of.

Other than that please explain  your post Lucky mike.

For many ( not all ) expats their role is to point fingers and criticise.

I'm sure they love the place.

As for this poor soul

.RIP

Many seem to run out of money, are disgnosed with a serious ailment, break with partner, etc etc and feel they have no options. Bridges are burnt back in their own country ( in their mind at least ) and suicide becomes the best option  ( in their mind ) .

The usual suspects will sneer and have a go at plod or thai people but the reality is for many old western men thailand is the last chance saloon. When that chance has gone many will go with it sadly.

Sadly he ends his life then inadvertently involves family, friends to carry on without him bringing sometimes grief, blame and financial burden...

One can get some insights as to the situation. For example, was the apartment in an expensive area, was his ref well stocked, was he unwashed and in a state of neglect. Surely there are markers indicating his circumstances. Maybe he had a pension from Switzerland. All possibilities are equally open, I think. There is not enough information at present, it seems.

Gentleman please if you desire to end it do so in a respectful and not reckless manner!

I disagree. I think if you are going to end it you should GO BIG. Just try not to take any one with you.

I guess it was your car and no insurance on falling bodies.

5. You have a solution to someone with the prospect of several months/years of excruciating pain ahead and inevitable death?

Well please let us know.

If all the windows were locked and the balconies caged, what about the roof, bridges etc etc?

If people are so desperate they will find a way to end it.

Animals are put down to stop the suffering...
