Video: Fake Thai smile exposed! Irony reigns as "copycat" videos take the Mickey!

The world of Chinese social media viewed a clip of a Thai woman dressed in traditional attire putting garlands on passengers about to get on a tour bus.

 

But she was just smiling for the camera - she seemed to be bored with the whole exercise.

 

One passenger was virtually lassoed by the couldn't care less staff member!

 

The perfunctory nature of the staff member has heralded a whole host of ironic "copycat" videos to poke fun at the woman.

 

One features a traditionally clad lady handing out bent clothes hangers - when she is given money she seems overjoyed.

 

Another is of a man handing out lanyards at a company.

 

Thai site "Reuangded" said the Thai woman in the video should be ashamed.

 

Thaivisa hopes this doesn't lead to defamation lawsuits....

The copycat videos are usually funny and no harm there, but bashing Thai women who have to greet and take a photo with thousands of Chinese passengers entering the bus is really low. It's a job and the smiles are "fake". What a surprise.

Perhaps it’s a tad unfair to expect the girl to have a constant beaming smile whilst handing out a bus load of garlands and having her picture taken for the millionth time (despite it being her job).

These were my thoughts exactly when the GF showed me the vid last night. She ( And I guess most Thais) are angry at the girl for the fake smile. Yes could have made it less fake but give her a break.  Chinese tour groups + 100 odd fake smiles ( Without it showing) for the camera cannot be easy to achieve.

Yes, you are right; but the video happens to coincide with something real and daily which all of us who have lived here long enough recognise: the fake Thai smile, which vanishes as soon as you turn away from it (if you instantly turn back to the smiling person, you will see that the beaming, full smile on the face of the Thai has miraculously vanished). This was one of the first little bits of 'culture shock' I got when I came to Thailand: how people can seem to smile from their heart, really deeply and with genuine friendliness - only to discover that (often - not always, of course) it is a complete act and is not accompanied by any corresponding inner feeling. I've even seen parents teaching their little tots the fake Thai smile. It seems that for Thais, a 'smile' is nothing more than a handshake - a mere brief and not to be sustained gesture (sustained only until the smiled-at person has looked away!). A genuine smile, in contast, lingers and fades away slowly (not in a nano-second!).

True, you know Thai smiles are generally fake, I know Thai smiles are generally fake.

 

But with these, it's just a a tad obvious, and the disdain, no disgust for (what are presumably) the customers is just as obvious.

 

Still, the video clip was amusing... I wonder what the customers were thinking...

Agree. Also, some of us (in our student years) did similar jobs and carried out our repetitive tasks with much more genuine politeness and friendliness than this young lady. I know I did!

No need friend, the whole 'if you can't or won't do it then you have no right to complain about others' argument is not valid. I won't clean toilets but if someone else does it in such a way that it's still dirty, then I will complain and am justified in doing so. If you can't do a job sincerely and honestly, then don't do it, find a different job or don't work. There are always options.

Bad day my left foot. Situation normal. Being determined to see no fault is a recipe for getting ripped off in Thailand but hey, whatever your poison....

We all had shitty days at work, and working with the general public sucks big time. 

Big deal move along.

I did like the funny clip, but that's all it is,  funny.

Hilarious, and very healthy to poke fun at your own culture and human nature  in general. Tour groups are often derided throughout the world, they do after all represent the most unimaginative and mundane cheapskate class of traveller. Travel alone with a varied itinerary that takes you well off the beaten track, and you will garner plenty of genuine smiles and more besides.

An optimist only sees good things. A realist tries to see everything.

 

If you don't like working with the general public then go back to school and get a qualification or find another job. Too many people try to blame others for their own situation. We all have choices.

I retired 4 years ago.

Smiling 10,000 times for Chinese tour busses she should get an award. Nobody likes boat load after boat load. Especially a Chinese boat load.
