‘Headless ghost’ in Nakhon Si Thammarat identified

By The Nation

The “headless ghost” who appeared in a photo posted by a rescue official in Nakhon Si Thammarat that went viral has been identified as a shopper walking into a convenience store.

The photo of a headless individual in silhouette walking from the road to the Lotus Express store in Thung Yai district of Nakhon Si Thammarat was posted by Praiwal Ubonkan, chief of the Tai Tek Tueng Foundation’s rescue unit in Thung Yai on Wednesday.

Praiwal said he was manning the road in downtown Thung Yai Tuesday night and taking photos of the area to report on his operation. When he checked his photos the following day, he spotted the headless man.

After the photo was widely shared on the social media, Sompop Chaengsawang, 41, came out to identify himself on Wednesday, saying he was the person in the photo. He proved this by identifying the license plate of the motorcycle seen in the photo.

The man said he did not know that someone was taking a photo in front of the shop. He explained that he was looking down as walked towards the shop to avoid slipping, as the path was covered in mud following a heavy rain shower.

Sompop turned down Praiwal’s suggestion that the pair make merit together to ward off bad luck. According to an ancient belief, if an individual is seen headless, he will meet with an accident that might kill him. Sompop said he did not have to make an extra merit because he already gives alms to monks almost every morning.
