Couple arrested while trying to use Japanese tourist’s credit card

A couple were arrested after failing in an attempt to purchase a smartphone using a Japanese tourist’s credit card they had found at an ATM machine in Bangkok.

 

Pimolphan Saengprathoom, 44, and Wuthanusorn Supharp, 33, were arrested at a shopping mall on Rama 4 road in Bangkok’s Khlong Toey district at 10pm on Thursday by a patrol policeman from the Thong Lor station.

 

The two attempted to buy a Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone with the Mastercard credit card but despite six tries, Pimolphan’s signature failed to match that on the back of the card.

 

The cashier then sent out a security officer to alert police. The security officer spotted the policeman patrolling the area and led the officer to arrest the couple, who were then taken to the Thong Lor police station.

 

Wuthanusorn told police that he found the card at an ATM machine on Soi Sukhumvit 4 at 11pm, and after he gave it to Pimolphan, the couple decided to shop for expensive goods to resell. They started with the phone.

 

Police later contacted the owner of the card to retrieve it at the station.

6 attempts to write a japanese signature, surely 1 or 2 would have been enough to raise suspicion but well done anyway. a bib patrolling well there's a good thing. also, is it just my eyes or have they literally chained those 2 together?

Oki doki! What about maching the name on the card with a valid ID first, and then also match the signature.

Dumb boy too. I mean that after been given 6 chances, one would think that he could get it right one time.

It seems that they don't use the Thai ID for anything other than official business. Why else, for example, ban sales of alcohol for everyone near schools instead of asking to see the ID of anyone who appears to be underage. I can only imagine it is too simple, as Thais do like to complicate even the easiest task.

I thought the signatures were hardly ever checked but nevertheless this is good!

Previously a CC in the name of Angus Andrew McTavish being used by a Thai katoey would not have raised any eyebrows.

The Japanese are amazing with their creative cutting edge technology.

 

Seems their credit cards can be used as some sort of time warp portal.

 

The Thai guys found the card in an ATM at 11pm ..... yet they were apprehended at 10pm

Pin is not needed if the card is swiped. Name on Japanese CC is written in Romaji (Roman letters). I have never seen a Thai shop check for the signature on the back of a credit card. More than likely the shop attendant was smart enough to realize that the thieves were not Japanese.

 

On a side note. I can understand how a Japanese person would lose their card at the ATM. In Japan the ATM beeps and will not dispense the money until you recover your card.

They check signatures here? Or is it ‘cos I’m white they don’t care?

 

In Villa Supermarket they used to hand the card back to me before I even signed the receipt. Now they don’t even require a signature. Just give me the receipt. This is my debit card I’m talking about.
