With some universities operating substandard programmes, the Office of Higher Education Commission (Ohec) is strongly advising students to “check first” to avoid regretting their choices later.

“Before you choose to enrol in any programme, you should check with Ohec website to determine if programme you are interested in has any ‘issues’,” Ohec secretary general Supat Champathong said yesterday.

Early this year, the Ohec announced that 182 programmes offered by 40 universities had failed the Internal Quality Assurance standards for the number and qualifications of university lecturers.

Involved universities have since reported to the Ohec that they have cancelled 56 of these programmes, stopped enrolling new students for 24 other programmes, are in the process of improving 48 programmes, and have merged six of the problematic programmes with others to comply with standards.

“There are no reports on what universities have done with the 48 other programmes found to have problems,” Supat said. The universities had been required to report progress by April 30.

Supat said his agency would try to monitor the universities and the substandard programmes they had vowed to improve.

“But for now, students should check the programmes that still have issues, so as to make informed decisions about where to further their study,” he said.

to comply with standards.

it is an offence to give a certificate that is not certified by the ministry.

They never got a certificate, so no law was broken.

I graduated from Lao Khao school of Issan U.  I saved the bottle caps and neck bands, made me a college ring.

Ohec will refer these cases to Ohell.  Students caught up in this are advised to give offerings at Wat Dahei and hope for the best.

Universities are mere businesses printing worthless qualifications after collecting four year's worth of fees with little if any valuable educational input.  After the police, this is the single most destructive mafia holding back Thailand's progress.

Remember years ago when  democrat MP made an issue about all the PT MP's with bought degrees. He was told by Abbisit to let it go after they realized many democrat MP's also had questionable degrees. That says it all about Thai education.

I have a 2-year degree. I looked into a Thai university to finish up my Bachelor's where I was told basically just pay them my money and come back in a year-and-a-half to pick up my diploma.

Such scams happen also in some top ivy league  UK and USA universities with their "on line education courses"....and you would be really surprised if one was to name them...

There they go again.  Getting th public to do their job, while they sit on their asses, and try to figure out how to work less and collect payments
