Chinese Tourism Increasing Despite Coercive Guides: TAT Chief

BANGKOK — Tourism will not be affected by tours that coerce Chinese tourists to buy goods at designated shops, said the industry’s chief said Sunday.

 

Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, or TAT, said such cases are far and few and that authorities had urged China to keep a close eye on such operators.

Thailand’s most tourist arrivals are ‘Others’.

 

When added together, all the arrivals for countries outside the top 10, outnumber the most popular nations contributing annual arrivals to Thailand. ‘Other’s arriving in Thailand in 2017 numbered 11,517,782 out of the 35,381,210 tourist arrivals last year.

 

But, hardly a surprise, Chinese tourists were the Number One nation contributing tourists to Thailand with 9,805,753 arrivals, well on the way to exceed 10 million arrivals in 2018.

 

Second most popular arrivals in 2017 were Malaysians (3,354,800) followed by South Koreans (1,709,070).

I still remember one of my first visits to Thailand years ago, we went on a tour around Bangkok and the bus kept stopping at these stupid shops along the way, I stayed in the bus and the driver got really agitated that I wouldn't get out. finally, I got out and went across the street to look at nothing.

Thanks for that info very interesting. It would be more interesting to see a rating by how much revenue each country's tourism brings in.

Is this considered news? Is this what this country wants, money, money and more money?

20 years ago there was an island in the Mediterranean. called Majorca. It was flooded by cheap tour travelers similar to Thailand now. You could have a week for 99 Pounds all in. (incl flight) 

And the prices even went down but also the service and quality of course (VERY low class people), Cheating, ighting, booze drinking, prostitution, murder. Same as here.

But the governor of Majorca stopped that. All hotels got to have a certain standard. At the end - as it is today - it's an island for everybody, including families and children. The quality is good as the service.

But to destroy this island was fast and easy but to change the route by 180 degrees was painful and took more than 10 years. 

I doubt it Thailand (Prayut and cronies) will have the brain to manage this because there is so much money in this business, owned by these cronies.

That is a very good question.

 

The TAT keep saying how many millions arrive, but the only interesting statistics would be how many baht flow into the Thai economy once you take into account how many days each tourist spends in Thailand, remove the money paid in China in advance and which stays in China, remove the expenses at chinese-owned restaurants and shops, and add the additional cost on traffic, airports, infrastructure, garbage etc which is being paid for by the Thai taxpayers.

 

So dear TAT chief, repeat this for every country, and then show the ranking... cannot? I thought so.

Of course we would! The headline says:-

So which is it? "Increasing" or "Will not be affected" Another reason to think that TAT make up their own figures to suit their (ALWAYS) positive) agenda!

 I don't want to have to consult Google if someone hasn't got the decency to understand that (funny enough) not everyone understands what is going on throughout Asia, and your sarcasm is not warranted or appreciated  - I could probably give you one or two acronyms that you wouldn't understand, but in your case I would have to charge you the top rate for translation fees.

Just remember there are over 2 billion, with a B, Chinese and many want to get out of China to 'see the world'.  In a sense they do not care about coercive guides, they just want to see the world. Thailand ain't seen nothing yet in terms of influx of Chinese. There is a city in Canada that had more Chinese visitors and tourists than the entire population of the city in one year. 

Thailand really should be careful what it wishes for. The increase in money money money at the expense of hordes of (often uncouth) Chinese package tour customers may well turn out not to be good value. There are down-market hotels and tour companies who specialise in this market. Having been close to one of the former some years ago, I can tell you is was not an appetising experience, and that was before the "cheap & cheerful" market gained a foothold under the (now departed) Tourism Minister Kobkarn. People in the know offer the Chinese what the Chinese will accept, and history shows they are often prepared to accept very little so long as residence (legal or otherwise) might be on the cards or there are bragging rights when they get back to what they call home.

 

Attractive it is not.

The Chinese people there come here are not rich as meny of the Chinese tourist in Europe and American is 

I will still say this tourists will break Thailand down because most of the money go to Chinese owners of tours restaurant etc very little going to benefit Thai people 

On my first visit to Thailand, I ran into a tout at the Grande Palace. He tried to get

me to go to a temple that only is open to the public 3 days a month. I toured the palace,

then I ignored the tout and found an old tuk tuk driver who took me to the Golden Teak

museum which was free to see on the GP ticket. It is not only the Chinese who get mistreated...

  Best advice I have is to not trust people at the major tourist attractions, especially if they claim

to have a fantastic deal for you to go and see..

Funny my first thought was 7-11 is making money.  I see many Chinese in 7-11 buying all kinds of stuff.   I also see them at the duty free store and carrying bags of stuff at the airport.   They all have the biggest luggage you can buy.   

I read somewhere in TV that only 5% of the Chinese with passports have need to Thailand so far.   

 

Can anyone say they ever were able to get a foothold into one of these Chinese girl circles?   

Maybe Thailand issuing a million free visas for every submarine purchased ?

I don't know where they are all going because I've been to Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Pattaya and Hua Hin and the places are deserted the worst I've seen in a few years!

You forget where the figures are coming from:-

 

"The Ministry of Tourism and Sports (TAT) has released its audited account of tourists arrivals" 

 

Whenever you see "tourist figures  UP", just look a little further along the article and you will see "The Ministry of Tourism and Sports" or "TAT"!
