Why No Grape Nuts Cereal In Thailand?

It is my understanding that Grape Nuts cereal is not sold anywhere in Thailand. I know lots of Americans like it; is it also known in the UK/Europe? I have switched to muesli which I like alot as well, but sure would be nice to have some grape nuts. There are no grapes or nuts in it, so there.

I haven't bought any lately but Villa Market on Langsuan used to have Grape Nuts. I'll take a look next time I go there and maybe ask them.

I am not a fan ob cold, wet breakfast cereals but Grape Nuts was an exception...there is a local conspiracy to have local food be instrumental in daily colonic evacuation...Grape Nuts challenged that dependency and was brutally punished...one more reason for my rejection of thai food...

now, to be really subversive, let's talk about Wheetena an' Cream of Wheat...de white man's gift to the woild but unheeded by constipated thais everywhere... :o

Boy, I seem to see grape nuts for sale in my usual haunts. However, I would be happy to know where to buy Cheerios on a consistant basis. Breakfast cereal availability has a far greater effect on my daily happiness than the runway, the present and past PM's, or the exchange rates!

I like homemade rice crispie squares...

That gets my vote! But have you ever tried to find Rice Crispies around here?? You would think that the heart of Asia with rice as an export would be big on rice cereal. :o

Grape Nuts were an old favorite, to a cold cereal eater like me, but they are SO dense! One tablespoon of grapenuts weighed half a pound, and once you started eating a tablespoon, you might take 18 minutes to crunch it all. Maybe I stopped eating them when my teeth fell out; I'll have to try them again.

Rice Krispies are available in farang markets, I think. I ate Coco-Krispies for a while in Thailand, with chocolate milk! But then, I also eat double chocolate cake. :D

We grew up on cold cereals. Our mom and stepmom just let us get up by ourselves and fix cold breakfast. We've all been quite healthy. Back then, Shredded Wheat came in a box of 9 biscuits, and the box had Niagra Falls pictured on it. The biscuits were three to a layer, which gray cardboard dividers that had stories on it. I learned to read from those cards! Then I would read the cereal box, ingredients and all. I learned later that Shredded Wheat (a big profit maker for Nabisco Company) was just burnt grass. No sugar, no salt, nothing but burnt grass. We loaded on the white sugar, though.

I married a Texas girl whose family started every day with a pound of cholesterol: pork sausage, ham, bacon, eggs scrambled in grease, and toast with butter. Uggggh.

Even now, once or twice a week, breakfast is 2 or 3 slices of burnt bacon, one hot raw egg sunny side up, and wheat toast with jam. But I think we have some CocoKrispies left over; just let me go find the chocolate milk...... :o

That's one advantage of Grape Nuts. One package lasts a long, long time so easy to stock up on. Once your teeth wear out you switch to Corn Flakes. Those two are the original dry cereals from the old sanitarium days in the USA.

I find the familia Fruit-X or now called Berry-crunch muesli to be my favorite these days.

Foodland sometimes has but as said it is mostly the muesli mafia these days.

Who was Euall Gibbons? Anyone know?

I always liked Lucky Charms but had a health nut mom who made us wheat germ and banana shakes for breakfast instead. Anyone ever seen Lucky Charms? I wouldn't mind revisiting my missed childhood :o

Euall Gibbons was one of the first TV people to promote organically grown products and a healthy lifestyle in the US back in late 60s...if he's the same guy that I'm thinkin about...kinda looked like yer kindly old uncle, paunchy an' bald headed...not exactly a Jack La Lanne

If they do not have grapes or nuts in them, why the name and what do they have in them ?

Connection too slow to check the link in the OP?

From Wiki page:

Neither grapes nor nuts have ever been ingredients in the cereal. The original formula for Grape-Nuts called for grape sugar, which is composed mostly of glucose unlike most other sugar sources and food sweeteners which are principally sucrose. This, combined with the "nutty" flavor of the cereal inspired its name. But some employees at Post claim that the cereal got its name because the tiny nuggets resemble grape seeds or grape "nuts".

No; the advertising department just thought that "GrapeNuts" sounded better than "Black Gravel."

I think the manufacturer used a raisin syrup (condensed juice) sweetener since it was readily available when cane sugar was in short supply. (War rationing?)

Hence "Grape Sugar"

2 Things...

Euall Gibbons was that wild harvester guy right ? Good idea. I always do this with wild plants and things you can eat, and with things that people never bother to pick like oranges on their trees back home in California. What a waste. Natural food left to rot, while they go to the store to buy out of season fruit for top dollar with wax on it.

Then, as far as cereal, it takes up alot of room, but I always smuggle some from home. As much as fits int he suitcases given all the other stuff I bring back here with me. Sometimes silly like Diggum Sugar Smacks, or Froot Loops, or serious like Cheerios, or Puffed Rice.

I think the stuff is just toooo overpriced in this country. I can't do it. It's a matter of principle.

Grape Nuts are at Villa. Always have been...

I was recently in Bangkok. Checked out both Villas on Sukhumwit.

No grape nuts.

Also tried the farang food markets at Emporium, Paragon, and Central World.

No grape nuts.

Doing a little research, I find it is a declining brand even though it is a classic begun in the late 1800s. It has fallen out of the top ten, and not expected to make it back, though unlikely to be killed as a brand, its devotees are loyal crunchers. Apparently, only a very small percentage of the population prefers a super crunchy cereal that is also sort of healthy, low fat, low sugar. Given Thailand's budding youth obesity problem, if Thais are buying ready to eat cereals (do they?) they are missing out on a decent alternative.

Looks like I will have to learn to live without my beloved nuts.

Anyone know if I can score some in Singapore?

Nobody visits me from America now unless they bring in some grape nuts. Thats my new rule. OK, I think I am whining now. I miss that certain crunch.

I did contact Post cereals about this. No answer. Bastardz!

BTW, if you actually see a box of grape nuts for sale in Bangkok, please post the exact location. I suspect the brand may have been dropped here because of falling market share; would be happy to be proven wrong.

I'm pretty sure I saw some in Villa Soi 11 recently. In fact, I recall 3-4 weeks ago there being a special 'promo' display featuring a dozen or so different US cereals including Grapenuts and Cheerios and such like.

Couldnt vouch for the consistency of supply though. Here today, gone tomorrow, I suspect.

Grape Nuts = EVIL food!

Well for me anyway.

Highly addictive and my resolve to have only a sensible amount would go out of the window. Would always end up with a sore tummy and vowing never to buy another box. All my own fault of course. Im actually often glad that i cant easily spot certain foods here!

However, good luck on your Grape Nuts quest Jingthing.

OK, thanks. I will try again. Are you sure it was "pure" grape nuts and not one of those heretical knockoffs like Grape Nut Flakes (the horror!)?

And, please, do not even get me started about Honey Bunches of Oats ...

worse comes to worse, and your craving other things too (or get a list from friends too, then split costs?), can always try a company like http://www.britishcornershop.co.uk, prices are same as in UK but you pay shipping costs (can be pretty costly). Sent a great food parcel to my brothers family in Argentina for Christmas and arrived fine.

There is probably better online deals that than one, if you take a bit of time to google for them.

edit: p.s they have grapenuts ( 2.79GBP).

I just bought some berry burst cheerios at Villa market soi 11 (suk of course). 320 a box though. I snatched the last buy one get one free as they were flushing out soon to expire product. they had regular and some other varieties of them as well. tasty stuff but not 320 baht tasty. I will check for grape nuts next time. It wouldnt surprise me if they had it for a price. they have a lot of imported cereal including Post products

Yep, Villa Market across from the Emporium has them. Eat em all the time. If you like your ceral a little sweet suggest you dab a little honey on the top after you add the milk. I think Grape Nuts are bran based but not sure. Probably should look on the box as lord knows what is in there but it tastes good!

Villa on Sukhumvit 49 near Samitivej has Grape Nuts - so I assume the other Villas will probably have Grape Nuts in stock as well.
