Foreign Minister says Thailand making progress on international stage

BANGKOK, 21 May 2018 (NNT) – Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs has highlighted Thailand’s progress on the international stage as the country will begin chairing the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) meeting in June, before taking the chair of ASEAN next year.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Don Poramudwinai, explained that, over the past 3-4 years, official exchanges between Thailand and other countries have grown in frequency and the nation has been successful in cooperating with other countries and achieving mutual benefits. He stated that, while progress along the national roadmap has slowed somewhat, it is important for Thailand to maintain the confidence of and acceptance by the international community.

On the subject of a political rally, scheduled for May 22 to mark the fourth anniversary of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and to call for elections, the minister said international opinion will only be affected if conflict occurs. He stated a peaceful nation will benefit Thais and foreigners in the country alike and that achieving true peace as soon as possible would be the best way to address the interests of all the country’s citizens. He remarked that as Thailand has extended a friendly hand to all nations, it expects reciprocation.

Pathetic and despicable people (and I don't mean the ordinary Thais - I mean the super-rich power holders who wilfully keep the people deprived of fundamental human rights and freedom).

Fully agree, the international community has scant regard for Thailand or Thais, and will only become interested if there is a massacre, which, if Prayuth and Mr Piggy have any sense they will avoid at all costs.

On the other hand, it's 8 years since the last army massacre of unarmed peasants, so another one might be overdue, not that I expect any other country will do more than wring their hands and gnash their teeth.

It would however, make things interesting for observers from afar like me. Relieve the tedium of same 'ole same 'ole.

I know april is gone, so it can not be a misplaced joke. Does that mean it´s the biggest lie of the year?

And yet another one of these typical nationalistic, painfully self-delusional news articles with zero informational value from the brainwashed hacks at the government's official mouthpiece, the National News Bureau. Any normal, regular person reading that self-aggrandizing BS ought to become sick to their stomach when reading that crap.

Yes, they are sweeping the stage floor - as it is all theatre - all lies, all fiction.

He actually held up his hand expecting a 'high five'..., still waiting..., embarrassed now..., red faced..., slinking back home.

That's great!

Then he can explain to the members of the ACPMEC and ASEAN:

Thanks for alerting us to this article, Jayboy: it is excellent. The tide is turning - and at last people are pulling off their gags and telling it as it is. More power to them (although we have to remember that papers like this one were FULLY behind the assault on democracy in 2014).

Not condoning it, perhaps they thought it would be a run-of-the-mill-Thai-coup, with the army standing down after a couple of months.

I feel another "hub" coming on.

Oh, another 'hub' is bound to come on - as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow morning. They can't help themselves. Hub this, hub that. And the tragic truth is that they are the hub of absolutely nothing whatsoever (except being number one in the world for vehicular manslaughter).

You are right but the tide hasn't yet turned.I think the influential wealthy Bangkok middle class may have become disillusioned with army rule but haven't moved at all to a more inclusive or democratic way of thinking.I am quite fearful about the future.

Thailand is finally faltering, not that it wasn't before.   Few UK broadsheets, inc Sky  economic editor  have really been bashing Thailand and have recently focused on Thailand emerging market status, not good,at all.  Soon as US puts another hike on its interest rates, and outflow of funds, gets underway,1997 has been suggested

Yes. The right to assemble. The right to vote. The right to eat a sandwich with any intention you like. The right to not have the railway carriage you are traveling in uncoupled from the train to save you from an 'angry mob' who are really plain clothed army. The right to demand the removal of a deputy prime minister who states he will resign if the people don't want him and then doesn't. The right to call into question blatant nepotism. The right of a free media to investigate any public figure and report on their findings. The right to a fair trial  in a civilian court. The right not to have tailor-made laws targeting you personally and applied retroactively. The right not to be sued for defaming a handbag...How much more do you want?

You wouldn't seek to excuse the above in your own country. Why then the racism of lower expectations for others?
