Push reel lawn mowers

Featured Replies

I need some exercise. Has anyone seen any of the manual push mowers for sale lately? Years ago they had them at Global House and at Home Pro. Anyone remember the classic Scotts reel push mowers? Now I'm confusing myself. Is it "reel push mower" or "push reel mower"?

My gardener rides on my mower - what is a reel mower anyway?

I've seen those on the homepro expo in bkk.

There's one in the MIL's place. No idea how it got there or why. Think you can get them at homepro, global house etc.

A reel mower has blades that rotate in a cylinder-like manner as opposed to rotating in a disk-like manner. Think swamp cooler fan blades vs box fan blades. They can be manual or powered. Basically in the manual ones the wheels power the blades between them by turning as you push it or pull it.

In the US at least they pull powered ones behind tractors to mow golf courses.

I'm looking for a specific location that has them in Chiang Mai. They do not have them at the Global House or the two Home Pros that I frequent.

Now I understand. Indeed, some golf courses here have them - if all else fails try asking the groundsman.

Incidentally - you've set me another challenge - what on earth is a swamp cooler - and why would any one want to?

Just bought one - 2,900 Baht just west of Tesco, (the one near JJ Market) on ring road. Several shops sell mowers but first 3 or 4 shops did not have reel/push mowers.   However, a  few shops further down has them.

To cool your swamp, obviously !!! I don't own a swamp, so I'm sorted..

The trouble with a lot of reel mowers is that the steel used for the blades is not that hard ,they don't have a good temper to the blades at least for the cheaper ones . Its the same as a lot of tools these days , the steel doesn't stay as sharp as with older steel tools .Good luck with it and enjoy your exercise .

Why call them reel mowers? Where is the reel? I've always known them as cylinder mowers, because of the cylinder, as grin pointed out above.

Yeh really. Like fishing cylinders being called reels. Bloody stupid.

Don't get reeled in by all these undercutting comments, just take your pick from this lot of current cutting technology!

But don't take too long or the grass will grow under your feet.

OP, buy a petrol mower.  Much better exercise, pushing the heavier mower & emptying the catcher.  Emptying the catcher will build up your upper body muscles.  Or an electric mower if your lawn is small, & extra exercise coiling the flex up afterwards ?

I found this interesting mower history link that explains that a bladed reel is a cutting cylinder.
