I live alone and it's been kind of lonely. I'm a female too, so it's not like I could (or would) just randomly get strangers into my apartment to keep me company. So I need pets. The problem, of course, is that my building doesn't allow pets. There's this cat at a shelter near me that has a damaged spine, so it can't jump. She stays on the floor, looking sweet as ever. I would have loved to adopt her, but I have no idea of how to sneak her in. I don't want to carry her in a bag and the office lady sees my bag moving....

So I need your help... what kind of pets would be easy to sneak into an apartment? Something that can stay inside all the time, doesn't make loud noises, but can still be touched and petted? (so no fish for me)

And where to get it? I would like to try to avoid chatuchak as best as I can... I would hate to support those kinds of businesses. If I could adopt instead of buy, that would be even better.

P.S. I live in Bangkok

Actually a cat fits the bill best...unless you want fish but they aren't much company. A cat on the other hand provides  great companionship.

Bring her in after hours if you can. Or drape a sweater over the bag while walking past the office.

i'm sure there are plenty of people in the condo with cats.

Would be great if you adopted the injured kitty but first talk over clearly with the shelter what she requires especially regarding toileting as with a spine injury she might not have bladder and bowel control. Find out in detail and make sure it is something you can handle.

Also ask them if it is possible to make a sort of wheelchair device for her as she will be miserable if she can't move around at least a little.

I have stayed away from cats because of their habits of jumping everywhere and breaking stuff... But since this one cannot jump, I fell for her. She can pedal her way around with her hind legs, she just can't lift the back half of her body off the ground. You have helpful ideas! Unless I get some more input on other kinds of pets, I might contact the shelter lady again to ask if she's still there. Thank you.

Don't buy/get a pet because YOU are lonely.

What are you going to do with it when your situation changes , like moving back home ? Is keeping a cat/dog is a hot appartment , while you're away ( and not keeping the A/C on) , is bad for the animal ?

Stick to gecko's and ants . They wander in for free , no need to feed .

I've got pet tortoises and iguanas. They are vegetarian, and don't need much care, but can't be toilet trained.

Many people have domesticated rats. They are quite cute and friendly. They mainly live in their cage, but you can allow them to wander around the apartment when you are home.

I used to have a pet cockatiel. These are larger and more robust than budgies and easy to care for. Make sure you buy one that has been trained at birth. They are very affectionate and you can leave the cage door open when you are home so it can fly/walk around. They will often sit on your shoulder and play with your earings or hair. They love to join you in the shower. You can even train them to talk.

Finally, there are those cute little hedge hog things you often see in per shops, from Madagaster. I'm not sure what they are like as pets, but they look inquisitive and easy to care for.

Parrots are extremely loud, messy and chew everything in sight....I've had a parrot and a cockatoo, very demanding pets to look after.

OP, if you're working daytime, get a pair of sugar gliders, very lovely animals, but be aware, they can live up to 10 years, don't buy them just for a short period of time.

I am looking for a small dog, my son has just turned 4 and is asking if we could have one, we had a great dog but it was killed by a pickup before my son was born, also I have been thinking of having another dog we have a nice big garden which is secure, was thinking jack Russell or terrier, if anyone knows of someone who's dog has had pups I would be grateful if they could contact me. I live 100k south of Buriram,

Thanks in advance, To the OP I would take the cat.

We live in a house and have a variety pets, including 2 cats. Neither of our cats have broken things and neither go outside roaming. Depends on the breed. We have a Persian who does jump up, but very skillfully. He is a "people" cat and usually likes to sit with the family or close by one of us. Likes being with me a lot and very affectionate. The other is a Scottish Fold. He wants to be away from people more but comes and finds me when he wants the food topping up or taking to bed. He never jumps anywhere and when they hop a bit like rabbits on stairs.

Talk to local vets. They often know of people (sometimes breeders) looking for good homes for cats that are not wanted. Our Persian and his sister's mother's owner was looking for good homes for them and both were placed via the vet. The SF was left at a breeders who didn't want him once he sold the rest and the people who were gonna buy him didn't.

I'm like you Sheryl, I just love cats, I think they are the most beautiful creatures on earth. Whenever I'm walking or riding my bike and I see a cat, I have to stop and pet it, some will let you and some won't.

I have a ten year old cat, and even now she can run up a big tree in a couple of seconds, just like a monkey.

We had a parrot before, sometimes when the sun is setting, it used to make a clucking sound like a hen. Talk about identity crisis.... Our parrot, however was quite low maintenance, it even cleaned up its own cage. But it would need to get out of the house sometime, maybe stay in a balcony...

Yes I'm mostly out of the house during day time. I was worried the cat will be bored staying inside all those hours without company, especially since my place is not roomy. Sugar gliders sound like a good idea, any idea where I could get them from? In Bangkok?

I have tropical fish in a fully planted tank. Whilst they are not exactly talkative they do react and come to the glass when I approach expecting food. They are only fed once a day. Being a planted tank there is actually quite a bit of work to be done on a regular basis with water changes, plant maintenance and algae control etc. They are also very relaxing to watch and the constant noise from the bubbles and pump is calming.

I don't know exactly as our daughter bought them. Chatuchak and Sanam Luang 2 have them for sure, but i think they are sold at many smaller places like zoo shops too.

Most condos won't countenance dogs; however, they do tend to turn a blind eye to cats.

Cats sleep for up to 20 hours a day. They don't have separation anxiety. They don't get bored and destructive like dogs do - all you need is a litter tray, and a scratching post.

I think it was a French nobleman who said "When I play with my cat, I do not know if it is my cat playing with me". As Sheryl said, they are probably the best choice.

Perhaps the OP could consider changing to a more sympathetic condo.

Did you know how much she paid for them?

As a Newbie poster I  have to assume you are new to Thailand.

First thing to ask yourself is are you absolutely long term here.

Many aren't.

I'd love a pet but I'm not sure I can make the commitment so don't have.

Sneaking the pet into the condo I don't like.

Don't get a pet if you think it will end up back in the shelter in a couple years.

I've known of Thaivisa, but have mostly just been a reader of the news... I will still be here for another 3 years, so there's that...
